My '97 FE600E has only an oil SCREEN and a magnetic drain plug. I am trying to find out if an oil filter exists to replace my screen for obvious better filtering. Is there a way that one for a newer Berg can be fitted?Any info would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Sir:

If your bike is in fact a 97 you certainly do have an oil filter besides the screen.

Right behind the red anodized cover lies the paper filter.

Don't mind the rust on the countershaft sprocket. The Salton Sea tried to eat my Berg :x

Hey husabutt,

Thanks for the great picture! I had tried earlier to find out what year mine was. I posted the VIN and didn't get the info that time but no big deal. I have not got the title yet from the previous owner as he is out of town most of the time. He said the title says "HusaBERT" and it's listed as a 1997. But he also told me it was a left over. So could be a '96 or even a '95 I guess. I do not have the filter cover like the one in the photo. I have a black plastic screw-in plug identical to the oil fill plug, and behind it is a tubular screen and spring only. I have an owners manual of the original 501 and the pictures in there are the same as mine.

I guess mine must be older than a '97.

I also noticed your tank is blue, mine is yellow. Is that the factory color for '97?

Thanks,

Volvonut

Hi volvonut,

because of the plastic screw which covers your oil screen, your engine must be a ´96 or ´95.
The engine cannot be older, because the first e-start engine came out in 1995.
The engines between 94 and 96 were in most details the same.
Only difference between them is the diameter of the rockerarm axles and the screws that are used to adjust valve clearances.
The remaining parts of the engine are the same.
The next step in ´97, was updating to oil pump and micro oil filter. How it looks like you see on Husabutt´s picture.
By the way: ´97 and ´98 was also nearly the same.

PS: The blue fuel tank came in ´97. Older models had the yellow-transparent one. Also a hint to verify if the motorbike´s condition is original or assembled of some used parts......
So you can check if there is the proper engine mounted into the belonging frame.
Hope you understand what I´m talking about....

Thanks guys for the info! This really helped me with determining the year. It's all making sence now. However, I need to know if a filter can be fitted instead of the screen. I don't want to just shove one in there even if it fits right. I guess I could call Motoxotica and see what they think. Thanks again,

Volvonut

Most change the oil each and every ride. If you adhere to this schedule you should be O.K.

Even with the paper filter you will find aluminum shavings when you change the oil as the timing chain saws it merry way through the cylinder.

Changing the oil frequently is the rule not the exception
