I didn't see a thread for what to look for when shopping used so, I created this thread. If I missed a good thread or link for shopping used, please let me know.

With the 2009's coming out and being significantly different, I'm a little reluctant to pay MSRP for a 2008 model so, the question of buying used comes up. I can spot the obvious things like a worn chain and sprockets, scuffed/bent/marred stuff from low speed crashes, etc. What should I really be looking for in a used ride that will cost me serious money or heartache fixing?

Thanks,
Sid

sid,
i dont know what your budget is but i would spend a little time looking around on the internet. i just bought a "brand new" 06 fe 450 for $4995.00, from a disgruntled former husaberg dealer. the bike had 12miles on it, and i got the tool kit, backpack, manual, etc. so shop around, with the 09s coming out the older bikes should be cheap. from my research shopping around it sounds like 08 450s are still available to order from KTM although not at a discount at the time (about a month ago). im sure they dont want to sit on that inventory forever. just my 2cents. good luck.

Rule of thumb.....04 and up, no unusal problems. Every year from 04 up seems to get progressively better. At around 5000 miles you will probably want to consider freshening up the timing chain, rockers and cam bearings. 10,000 is probably about due for overhaul.

Some will say main bearings can be a problem on the 04-06 550's and 650's, more so on the 650. Then there is the occasional broken valve spring.

This is just my take.

i hear that there are a few 450s left over in the US unsold so go party!

berger has the history spot on IMHO. well said ken!

Taffy

I wouldn't add much to the comments made above apart from that if you want a 650, don't rule out the 2003 model - it still remains the best year for that capacity.

All the best,
Simon
