I usually tend to not use the clutch lever when upshifting, especially when I need to concentrate on my steering.

The 501 seems to do fine but yesterday I shifted without reducing the throttle and I heard a bad noise coming from inside the clutch basket.

Is that bad, how bad, and is my habit really not recommended or just not recommended.

I pull the lever each time I push it down.

I never use the clutch for up shifting except when I'm going through slow technical stuff.
After the noise I assume you kept riding, were there any more noticeable noises the rest of the ride?

i only ever used the clutch for downshifting.

Well, no, it was just a bad "clunk!" kind of noise and that was only once, because I did not reduce my throttling while upshifting. No extra noises following that, so I think it will be fine. It was just too violent that one time, I now know the limit.

I think that if you pull the lever while power shifting, the process is a lot smoother and that your clutch prefers that anyway, but not pulling saves on concentration, improves handling and reduces the blistering.

.....not to mention the all important fact that you keep a firm grip on the bars with both fists.
