I have been stuck at work late every night this week and have not been in a work on the bike kind of mood. Well I need to replace the battery and a quick inspection makes it appear as though I have to remove a few items to get it out. My lack of motivation means I have yet to just jump into it and pull it out.

As it is, I can raise the battery maybe an inch before it hits the frame. Can anyone clue my laziness in on what exactly needs to be removed to get the battery out of a 2002 FE501?

Thanks.

Greg

Hi Greg:

You need to pull the starter in order to get the battery out. Remove the starter bolts (2) and any wiring. Wiggle and pull on the starter until it comes out.

Check out the pics in this thread. It may give you some motivation. Or a large Starbucks coffee would be my choice :D .

Maybe there is more than one way to skin a cat - I took out the top shock bolt, flipped the shock back and the battery slid out from the back.

I take it out complete with the battery box.
Disconnect everything, loosen the batterybox, move it so you can disconnect the -.
Then you can take it out on the left side. Tricky but possible.
Probably faster just to take the bolt out of the suspension as said but it is possible.

By far and away the easiest way to get the battery out is like the above post says. Take off the rear plastic, the shock guard, and top shock bolt. Lay the shock back, take off negative terminal, positive, loosen what bolts you need and pull it out the back. Should only take you about 10 or 15 minutes max.

Replace your stock battery with the YTZ7S, big difference in Cold Cranking amps, like almost double. 70 stock, and 130 with the YTS7S. Make sure that the point at which you land the negative terminal on the frame is bare metal, no paint, rust etc... It made quite a difference on my 01 501.

Dan at Motoxoctia told me that a YTX7L-BS will fit in the pre-2004 bergs even though it is taller. That battery will provide even more power than the YTS7S.

It sounds like the YTZ7S is already a big improvement over my current battery so I'll likely go that route. Thanks for all the tips.

Please don't get too excited about putting the uprated battery in.

My belief is that the power transfer between battery and starter (this is the commodity you are trying to maximise) is limited more by the starter than the battery on the Berg. I am not aware that the current drawn during starting is limited by the battery.

I put the uprated '04 spec battery on my '03 650 and it made no difference. Yes, ,the battery does have much more capacity. This means that it can continue to crank the engine, at a speed which is too slow to get it to fire up, for much longer than the old battery could.... i.e. putting the uprated battery in is a method for wasting even more time before giving up and using the kickstart ;-)

I know some other people have had different experience to mine, however I can say with confidence that

- the uprated battery made no difference with my bike
- it definitely does have much greater capacity but this is a red herring as far as its ability to start your bike is concerned (even the stock '03 battery has enough capacity to crank the engine over many many times before starting to run flat)

Sorry to pour a bit of cold water on this....

BTW it's easy to check to see if the '04 spec battery will help in your case. Just stick another battery (eg your car battery WITHOUT THE CAR ENGINE RUNNING of course!) across the existing one using jump leads (or even better wire it in properly) and see if it makes any difference. If the bike suddenly starts OK, maybe the '04 battery will help, if it doesn't, the '04 battery definitely won't help...

Cheers,

Jerry
