Considering trying to stuff a complete KTM motor in my 99 frame, just curious if anyone has made this swap or has some important information to share. It is looking like it'll need to be a 640 motor since this is the only one I've seen with the chain on the correct side. Any insight on whether or not it is easy to swap sides? Just need a KTM wheel? If not, other potential issues I might face planting a 640 in the Berg frame? Was hoping the older motors might just swap in easily. The only thing I can see stopping me altogether is if the rear mount/swingarm pivot points are different widths. Shouldn't be hard to deal with the front mounts. Other question is are there any KTM motors with equivalent reliability issues to Bergs? Is ANY KTM motor a step up? Or should I avoid older KTMs like older Bergs.

And if anyone has a line on the parts that would be great too :)

The 640 is the LC4 motor and they vibrate horribly. Also, the motor cases are pysically larger than the 'bergs so it will probably take some major frame modification to make one fit - probably it will be too tall, not to mention quite a bit heavier. Personally, I think it would be a step backwards. The KTM RFS motors are closer in size to the 'Bergs and the top ends are virtually identical. The only problem would be the rear wheel and you could use a KTM one or flip the Husaberg one over and do the necessary mods to the swing arm to mount the brake caliper.

I once rode a KTM 640 Adventure a bit when shopping for an adventure touring bike and it made my KTM 450EXC feel like a road bike in comparison. The vibration was so bad I couldn't see anything in the mirrors and the vibration through the bars was almost unbearable. Needless to say, I didn't buy the 640. The older 620 KTMs are notoriously hard to start, along with shaking like a wet dog.

Alright, sounds like a need a motor from a 625 then...any idea what the case dimensions are with those? Still require frame modification?

what about another Husaberg? what about the 2001-2008 engines?

The 625 is the same bike/motor as the 640. The actual displacement of the 640 is 625cc. The older 620 was actually 609cc and the 625 motor was created by lengthening the stroke 2mm. In either case the motor is the same physical size.

I assumed all your comments were directed towards the older "640" bikes and didn't apply to the newer "625" bikes (a la 05 625SMC). As for the Berg, I would do a 04+ motor, but they are even harder to find. If my search is limited to a narrow window of KTM motors though, I guess it'll be whichever I can find first.

Taff, you have any 04+ motors/ignition laying around you don't need? :bounce3:

I do but the cost of shipping would make you cry!
