Hi. Firstly to introduce myself.
I have just bought a 2005 fe450 that had come through "midwest racing" (who seem like pretty decent chaps) and was turned into a 380 with an extra underseat fuel tank and some other bits and bobs. I bought it off a friend of mine so that I could road register it and then do a bit of green laning (if I can find any!!) plus hopefully the odd endure.
It was starting and running great when I grabbed it of my mate but even though I haven't taken it outta the garage yet it's got harder to start and runs really badly. I've had the carb out and given it a good clean, changed fuel, plugs etc. It runs better by turning out the fuel screw but that seems to be out about 3 to 3 1/2 turns now which can't be right, also it's a major pain to get to.
My main problem now though is the kickstart has snapped and Midwest say they're nearly £90, jeez there must be another option, not too many choices though being a left hand kickstart. I have the electric start but am reluctant to start it from cold on that
Anyhoos I'm looking forward to having a piddle about with it :bounce3:

when you say kickstart, do you mean the lever or the shaft?

My 05' 650 starts from cold with the button. I usually just choke it and push the button. If that won't spin it...

I pull the manual decomp lever, then hit the button, then after it spins a couple times let go of the decomp lever. Fires every time.

Hi there,
Keep your eyes on eBay, got one a couple of months ago for £20, took a while for one to come up at the right price though.
You should be fine starting it from cold on the button, once its running better.
Have you given the carb a good clean out?

Good luck

Carl

Cheers for the replies chaps
Yes I guess it shouldn't be too much of a problem to use the starter but I've heard that the sprag clutch can have a hard time especially from cold
plumbbob I've cleaned the carb about 3 times now but I might pull it apart again
Is there an air screw as well as a fuel screw?
Yes I'll deff keep an eye out for a kick start as I had the old one welded and it lasted about 3 kicks!!

The air screw is the one at the bottom of the float bowl in front of the starter motor.
Possibly a silly question but when cleaning the carb did you remove the two jets (pilot and pilot air jet) behind where the rubber air boot attaches?

afaik, all the years (89 to 08) will fit with the 06 on being shorter.
