for those that haven't read the 'owners doc' you may not know that to get the kickstart to push from the top of the stroke makes a huge difference to starting a bike.

indeed i once put the kickstart lever back on without pre-stressing the spring and the bike was all but impossible to start off such a short kickthrough...

two things here.

first
the newer, squarer, crescent plate is a better fit and appears to do a first rate job. the two screws though are made of marzipan!

secondly
having studied the movement etc of the system i can now see that the delay in the kick lever locking and starting to turn the motor is because the 'keyhole ratchet' slides around on the top of the crescent in a clockwise direction for 1/2" or 15mm in a closed/compressed position. turning it clockwise, at the end of the crescent the keyhole ratchet falls off the crescent, 'pings' open and is then free to hook out into the wheel/housing of the gear.

my question is, has anybody ground away 3mm of material parallel to the inner edge of the crescent and starting say 10mm from the left end?

hope someone has tried it. i'll try and take some photos (again) of modifying it. at least of got the old one to try it on first!

well here are some a-b-c type pictures for all those that want to start their bikes easier.

WARNING the cut out in the crescent was a mistake. a blob of weld so that the 'keyhole' stays in the compressed and closed position was necassary about 2-minutes after this photo. the next photo-the correct photo-wasn't in focus so it was this photo or NOWT!!!

if i'd cut out 15mm-then i put back 5mm. the idea is that the moment you touch the kickstart the keyhole drops into the inside of the gear and engages.

it's worked brilliantly!

note how i have gently machined the left screw entry with a riffler.

old one is round and thin. the new crescent is thicker and for some reason is square at the end with 15mm x 2mm machined out. i put 5mm back in soon after this photo.

in this position the bike would have started and there would have been a non-stop ratchet noise! not good. so i welded a 'blob' back in and ground to suit!

the kickstart is now engaged in about 1" of travel at the foot. not bad i think you'll agree!
