I've recently added a 2000 Honda XR650R as a second bike to my 2006 Husaberg 650 and have a question regarding kick starting...

I know there has been a recent thread about proper techniques for starting Husabergs but... I;ve tried all of them and my bike is extrremely hard to kick over. I think in 200 attempts I've been successful once.

Now I've heard some people say the XR650R can be tough to start but I've found it effortless to kickstart. Anyway...

I'm wondering why I can start the Honda so easy and not my Berg.

Could it be due to the Berg's higher compression ratio or is it possible that my valves are off and causing the problem?

May have somthing to do with the steep ramp on the camshaft along with a reasonable compression ratio sucking more energy and reducing rollover speed .
Maybe some struggle with the left foot kick.

But if you can kick it over plenty fast and its just not firing then it will be a tuning issue.

Bergbro, yes I think part of the problem is I can't get the same rollerover speed and the left side kick doesn't help either.

Also for some reason I seem to have way more problems with the kickstart lever smacking me in the back of the calve muscle. It snapped back the other day and I'm black and blue over most of the muscle.

I was told by Rick at OffRoad Boss that when these bikes are setup properly that it should kick through like butter and that it can even be starting by using the hand on the lever.

Any other thoughts would be most appreciated!

the only time i have had bad kick back is from kicking from the wrong spot or tuning being off, but yea watch out when it happens... :D

I would be happy to go over your setup & clarify procedures if you like.

Rick

Take Rick (BOSS) up on his offer.

I have a 2005 fs650e, When I first got it I could'nt kickstart it. I'm 6"4 200lbs. Once I got the procedure for kickstarting down pack, It will start first or second kick everytime no mater what tempature.

I actually did speak to Rick and he was very helpful and gave me his method for kicking. I couldn't make it work but... I think if I had proper boots then my foot and calf wouldn't take such a beating and then I could exert more speed through the kick.

So I'm going to order some boots and then give it another go.

does yours kick back a lot? my assumption would be your not kicking it from the right place, but when i meant tuning i meant the complete engine tune. the valves are not adjusted right or the timing itself is off or it could be carb tuning too or a combination of all three really. you have verified it does run correct? like i mean you can roll start it or e-start it and get it going and once its going it stays running?

I have both a Honda 650R and Husaberg 650 and can kick start them both easily, but the technique for the Husaberg is different:

1. Place the bike on the right side of a curb.
2. Stand on the curb next to the left side of the bike holding the handlebars.
3. Now with the bike lower than you, kick it with your right foot.

If you can master this, you can start it with tennis shoes, assuming you're right footed.

I follow pretty much the same process as motodude when I kick start my 550. In the cooler months a stone cold start is usually a kick start then once the motor is even slightly warm I can button start it.

For mine, I tilt the bike over to the left (or you could find higher ground) choke on, no pumping or use of the throttle....kick slowly to compression, in with decomp lever and slightly (on just past) compression. let the lever kick starter return to top and a solid kick with my right foot while standing beside the lhs of the bike. Even from cold it'll go first or second kick easily. When i kick I use the front part of my foot, I find I get better push on the starter. I can kick it with thongs (flip flops) if need be, but I usually have boots on when I start it/

Somethign to be aware of is that if your valves are not set correctly or getting toward needing adjustment that the bike will be harder to start. It'll run fine even when the valves aren't right but it will be harder to kick start for sure.

As a side question....does your bike kick easier when it's warm...?

Not sure of this will help, but good luck
