I'm trying to replace the O ring on my 01, 470. I was wondering if anyone could help me with ideas on how to remove the old one as well as fitting the new one. I havn't had any success for the last few days.

in what context? are you on about the huge fat one on the outside of the cases?

regards

Taffy

i don't think theres a prob getting it off once you remove the kickstarter. that's usually the problem. heat, lube, prybar and persistence.

The kick start o-ring just rests on top of the case therefore it is super easy to remove and usually falls out when you remove the kick start lever. Put some grease on the new o-ring to help hold it in place and then carefully reinstall the kick start lever as it helps hold it in place.

A good seal pick is a necessity in any mechanics tool box.

Make sure the area is clean. Wipe clean with a cloth rag, try not to shove any material into the area. Carefully use the seal pick to remove the old O ring.

Clean the area again with a cloth rag, you can use some lectra motive contact cleaner on the rag, do not spray onto kick shaft, you will flush debris into the bushing. However, you can put a rag on the shaft and cover the case, and use the contact cleaner to clean up the splines on the kick shaft.

While you're at it, clean out the mounting bolt hole and threads.

Put a little grease on the shaft and O ring and slide it into postion. You will probably need to use a thin blunt object, like a small flat blade screw driver, to push the O ring into the case recess.

Clean the shaft up good with a rag. Put the thinnest of coatings of never siese on the splines of the shaft and mount the kicker.

Be sure you have cleaned up the mounting bolt, and put a dab of red loctite on the the bolt threads, and tighten to specified torque.

You're done.

Persistence as Ned describes = about a one beer procedure in this case. Not even close to being a two beer procedure.

It looks as if the old one is fully wedge in, i can feel rubber just car't hook it out. Hope i don't have to take the gear box cover off?

Thanks for the help, once again you boys come up with the goods.

If you do have to take the side cover off its pretty easy. While you are in there you may want to replace your water pump seal/bearing and the two impellar shaft o-rings and perhaps upgrade to orangebergs water pump seal kit (your countryman).
