As my existing bracket is fubar I'm having it repaired, would it be wise to upgrade to a different stand altogether and have custom lugs welded to frame and use say a late model berg stand?

the Husey is a leg in the middle whereas the later set up is a S/S simply placed on the outside and crushed down. Just weld a nice new box but AS I SAID, CHECK the angle it comes up at, the tuckaway, how high it stops before the exhaust etc.

I've seen a few disasters and some of them are stood here. only 1 out of about 5 customers bikes stands on its own stand yet 3 of the 5 have them.

problem is i've not got a leg to stand on lol and i dont know what the box should look like to start with. Any pics or rough dimensions may help :)

a couple to help you along:

there has to be an angle so that when up it is just outside the line of the swingarm and when out it is ouside the bike.

this one is of Maddel's Husey (he's the one that did the doc photos etc with me). look at how the stand stops well short of actually hitting the exhaust but is tuvked in. any higher and a worn bolt and it would initially whack the exhaust.

always convert any old set up to the 2004+ set-up with a nice thick, shanked bolt to rub inside the sidestand. the SS will need drilling so the whole setup will be really tight at the beginning. the side stand must be tight left and right or it will just lay over diagonally. if you lose the paint on the two swivel faces it is a shame but it will be a nice fit!

Hello Stealth. Wow you are not kidding about the trashed brackets. We need a tetanus shot after looking at those pix. Yuck!
Must agree, if you are not competing for real money you need a stand. The OE steel always was a mite thin for the usual abuse. Forget weight saving here. I like the box idea, plus lots of grease, keep oversize bolts tight, and never use the stand for a pivot!
Free great idea; cut the rubber handle off an old hammer. Then zip-tie it over the whole side stand spring. Fixes several issues. I used a broken old Eastwing hammer and the blue handle even matches my frame. Might have to hone the rubber out a bit. Use a 1/2" drill bit for this. Don`t hurt yourself.
