i happened to mention to DaleO the other day that my bike seemed to be running richer lately. He told me to look for an 'O' ring in the carb that starts to leak.

i ordered a new one without looking and fitted it yesterday.

the 'O' ring fits on the small brass housing in the floatchamber. the needle valve 'bobs' in and out of it. to get to it you remove the float and float valve and you see what looks like a recessed brass nut.

mine fell out and the 'O' ring had no pressure left at all. the new one was a press fit.

i'll let you know how we get on with it. i even had to wind the idle up recently just to keep the engine going.

CONTAMINATION
if it's what i think it is this 'O' ring has been a phucking expensive mistake! my oil was like piss water and i can feel by rubbing it in my fingers that this isn't good....... i figure this is going to show up in shagged parts sometime soon.

So what you are saying Taffy is if you leave your fuel switch on with this knackered O'ring, basically it floods the carb into the bore past the rings and into the sump.
Hence as you say your oil goes like piss water.
I might just check mine to see what state it is in, this could lead to may misdiagnosed jetting problems.

Sparks.

RE: Re: keihin - ran rich

exactly steve.

the oil stinks.....

my carb is now about 8 years old.

it's a warning for everyone. an 80p part.

My carb was only a couple of years old when it started leaking. I was up in the mountains and had the bike parked and was getting ready for a ride and noticed the overflow line dripping a drop, once every minute or so. Went to my local shop which is Scott's performance products and they said that they had a guy come in just recently with the same problem with a PWK carb on a KTM 200.

It's interesting that Taff's lasted so long, and mine only lasted a couple of years. I only run pump gas and do not put anything other than 1.5oz's of lucas fuel conditioner in my 5 gallon can when I fill it. The lucas stuff is a lubricant and not a solvent.

Glad that it solved your problem Taffy.

you guys got a "hmm" out of me as i've seen drops on occasion. prolly be worth a check next time i'm in there. thx for the headsup.

Ned,

It will steadily get worse if it's going. You can find the part here: http://www.sudco.com/ Go to carb diagrams and open the FCR MX new! It's part #37. However, for the price of postage I will send you one if you need it, I have a couple extra ones.

thx, dale, but i have to order some other parts from them, so i'll put it on the list.

it's stuff like this that makes UHE so worthwhile! how many years would i have carried on aswas? blaming the guide seals, shagged guides, rings, "naaaahh! just old mate" etc etc.

although i said it fell out, what i didn't say was a square rubber seal, it had no shape. one of my favourite workshop tools is a dentists pick. i use it a lot and went to get it under the 'O' ring to hook it off, but in order to get it off i had to poke the point straight in hard on one side.

the 'O'; ring broke in half...........

Thanks for the info Taffy and DaleEO! I'll have to check this during Spring Cleaning.
