Hey all. I guess i've gone and jumped in head first. Just got my first husaberg. 97 FE501. New bearings, piston, rings, cam. Seems like a nice, bike, but havent had much chance to ride it. A foot of snow on the ground. But starts great. my first attempt at starting a left kick bike, in 30* and snowing weather, one kick. So, i guess thats a good sign. Has professionly worked over suspension. I'm in the process of giving it a full look over and service, lubing all the linkage and all, new fuel lines.
I'm fortunate to have a dealer close that stocks lots of parts. Though, im alittle concerned about the issues ive heard about stator failors. But i knew about it going into the purchase. My dealer says its not as big an issue as alot of people make it out to be, but my best bud's dad had a 95 or 96, and replaced 3. I guess im gonna do some of the tricks i've read here, and hope for the best! Still not regretting getting it! just really want toi get out and ride it!! Best part is, its got a Street licence!

HBJ,

Congratulations on your new purchase. It sounds as though the bike is tuned up well and hopefully will give you many years of enjoyment. It is not uncommon for the stators to go out every three years or so but with proper attention can be prolonged for many years. I have on '02 FC550 bike with the original stator still in it and it still runs like a champ, three years now. Keep the moisture out of it and give it attention after a washing and you should be fine. I live in the SW desert of Az where moisture is not much of a concern but I do keep it clean and properly serviced after every ride. Read through the threads on the site and ask any questions you can't find or are unclear about. The single best source of info I can direct you to would be "The Doc!" over on the left side margin of the page. Many good answers have already been given there.

Regards,

Already read everything in "the doc!" lots of good stuff. I'm not affraid to to lots of maintance on the bike. in fact, its a good bike for me, bacause im the person who is never happy unless he has a project to work on! If i can expect a 3 year stator life, thats great. Heck, i i get one year out of them, im fine with that. I acctually had to replace one on a 91 RM250 a few years back. No warning. started the bike, rode it into the truck, went to the desert, no start, bad stator. $350 from the dealer! But i do really like most everything i look at about my bike. And no one i know has one! Seemed to fit my needs a a dual sport. I wont do much street riding, but to connect trails. But the other option i was looking at in my price ranger were klx300 and xR400. I think i'll be happy with the Berg comming of a CR500. Thanks to all who put all the effort into the great info on this site! Learned bunches already!

Well, enough snow finally melted that i was able to get out and ride it for the first time! I gotta say, i like very much! But, i guess, i was expecting more from the power delivery. Of course, comming off a CR500, im used to massive power. IT seems to have plenty good power, pulls stong everywhere, but not like i was expecting. I dont know what normal. I'm luck if i can get the front wheel up in 4th and above. Again, comming off a CR500, and 5th gear wheelies up sandwashes. I was told the bike has a 400 cam in it, so i dont know how that affects power delivery. And i know the final gearing is 13-49. IT runs great, though. I was impressing my buddies with the ablility to start it with my hand when its warm. And handles better than anything i've ever ridden! But, can anybody give me and idea of how the FE501's normally run?

48 RWHP is considered average.
55 RWHP is realistic with proper modification.

The average CR 500 produces low fifties.

Sounds about normal to me. you will be amazed at how much faster you will be with a bike that hooks up, puts the power to the ground and handles well at speed.

It does not have the hit of a 2-stroke 500, it's mellow and regular, but strong and does not like to give up.

I don't think you'll be able to lift the front wheel in 4th and it sounds like a good thing to me.

Make sure you keep your behind off the seat at high speed or you'll end up like me (see avatar).

Thanks all. I really wasent sure what to expect. My buddies ride new 250f's and a 426. even the 250's can get the front wheel up in 5th. i dont really care about the ability, as much as just making sure all is right. ITs got plenty of power. its just, everywhere. I guess 3 years on a CR500 have gotten me used to a good midrage hit. But i must say, i have never ridden a bike that hooks up, handles, or slides, as nice as this one! im in love!
