Any good advise welcome. Thinking of doing some enduro events this year. Up to now just been doing a bit of green laning on very flat fenland - went to the local MX track this weekend and pushed myself quite hard - cant hardly walk now - thigh muscles totally screwed. Googled this & its called DOMS - Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness and its totally normal when you start a new exercise routine appearantly.

Anyone else get this biking and is it worse or better MX or enduro. Any ideas how to minimise or is it just practice.

Brilliant crack though - hope I'm fit for next weekend.

RE: I

it gets a lot easier james. seriously. especially the bum bit. the real skill is to sit when you have too. there's only one club to join at your young age mate and that's TBEC. look it up ont 'puter lad!

another one that might interest you is called banovallum and they run about 5 meetings a year at louth in lincolnshire and i have to go past your door to get to them.

TBEC are generally 2hours, 1 hour lunch, 2 hours whilst the bano's are 1.5, an hour and 1.5 again.

regards

Taffy

RE: I

Arkley, your knackered cause your using muscles not used in that way before. Try playing football after not playing fo ra few years and you'll feel the same the next day.
Your body will soon get used to it to a certain degree........ but if you don't feel sore the day after your not trying hard enough.
MX will be a more intense but obviously shorter, 10-15 minute races,
Enduro's or Hare n Hound events will be less intense but last for a minimum of 3 hours.
Enduro's might make you feel a bit sorer for longer but you get a greater sense of achievement and more miles per pound.

Enjoy

RE: I

you had to google it!!!!! :) mate you need to a bit more regular exercise, those sore muscles are just letting you know your alive n kickn :) while not that enjoyable itself, I like the feeling that I have put my body through some hard work, means it will be stronger for the next assault :)

RE: Re: I

With the MX practice days its 20mins on 20 off. Thats 20mins of flat out (I wish) full on adrenalin - cant breath by the end (at 47 things are getting harder) rest 20min then out again. Up down round corners & in the air.

Enduro in my area seems like a lot of mud sliding and falling off slowly - whats the main enduro buzz ..(and before you say "try it & see" I will, but just interested in the meantime. (What with the changed stator give me a whole new perspective on things).

RE: Re: I

Enduros are all about "endurance" obviously and pacing yourself...... plus your dealing with terrain and obstacles that you won't find on a motocross track........stream crossings, logs, steep hills up and down, rocks, roots, ruts...etc.
I think the biggest thing with enduros is the challenge of actually finishing like a marathon as apposed to the MX sprint.

As others have mentioned, just doing some work at the gym will help alleviate the intenseness of this discomfort.

One of the best things that you can do to recover from this to have a good, thorough stretching routine that you do directly after the event while your muscles are still warm. While it is good to do some light stretching before an event, be careful with cold muscles, it is extremely important to thoroughly stretch after an event. You should probably spend at least 15 to 20 minutes doing this stretching routine. This helps to remove some of the lactic acid that is the byproduct of burning glycogen, and long chain fatty acids.

The second best thing you can do is to be hydrated before the event, as well as maintaining your hydration the best you can during the event, and hydrate after the event.

The key thing about being properly hydrated is the storage of glycogen, which is what your body turns sugars into for use as energy. For every gram of glycogen stored, the body requires 1oz of water. So, if you are not properly hydrated, your energy storage is limited.
