It's the valves not the cam chain.

Last night I posted about cam chain issues. I was sure that my cam chain had broken.

But tonight I took the rockerarm cover off the bike. And here is what I saw.

The bike is an 04 FE650. The hours are 126 hrs. I had the head reworked less than 20 hrs ago. The intake valves were replaced then. The bike was missing badly at elevation last weekend. It has always had issues at higher elevations. But last weekend was way bad.

I think that the one intake that is up beyond the spring is up way to high. If that is possable.

Any ideas as to what happened. I don't push the RPMs on this bike. I really don't have the skills to do so.

RE: It

It's only possible with a broken valve which it looks like you've got.
The real bad part is the valve head has prolly caused heaps of damage to the bore, piston, etc
Where they new valves you put in there?

Let's get the head off and see the rest. Only got 5 or 6 weeks to get her running.
You may want to go to a dual valve spring setup as well.

Yes I think that they were new valves. I had a shop do the work. I paid for new valves. I never really felt that the old ones were all that bad. I'm not naming names just yet. I need to talk to them first and pull the head.

As far as getting it running goes. I think that I might have to pass just now. I just don't have the funds to pull it off right now. The good news it that if I know what is wrong then I can decide to fix or scrap. If I fix I will know what it will cost me.

This is the bike that I like to ride in Colorado. And I would rather be riding a berg on a Force ride. But right now that seems like a pipe dream.

Thanks for the help.

1 tip before you start taking the head off, put the rocker back on and wash the bike, or all that sand is gonna end up where you dont want it!

Yep,

My three step process.
Talk to the dealer where I got the valve work done.
Wash the bike.
Take the head off.

I think that I would be very lucky if the damage was limited to the head.

sorry mate but your gonna have a valve head wedged in your piston! fingers crossed it is just the piston, worst case is head wrecked, liner wrecked, rod snapped, piston wrecked, seen it all, not on a berg tho. if it is just your piston/liner be sure to check rod isnt bent!

stop being a girl, get the head off and then you know what you've got. if it's nowt you can stop whinging and be at FR3.

as for the valves, i think they probably did need doing, i do them on nearly every single rebuild. what you need to know is whether you had steady and continuous beating of the inlet valve into the pocket on the piston. easy to spot, all we need is a photo of the pockets in the piston ok?

if so he had the valve timing wrong no mifs or buts.

as has been said could be awful, could be cheap as chips.

OK Taff how is this for action. Today I sold my 530 and have a line on a used 650 for the ride. I am going to button up my berg and focus on getting this new one online for the ride. I really didn't want to show up to a berg ride on a ktm.

At least your sense of proper standard is intact.

Good luck on the snapped valve
