I just acquired a complete mint Husaberg rolling chassis. Price was right...free, thanks to a family members divorce. The chassis is complete. Brakes are mint, tires, forks, rims, rear swing arm/shock, all mint.
The obvious problem is that it has no power plant or gear box, although the exhaust and radiator is in tact and in great shape.
Having never owned or even ridden a Huseberg I can't figure out the year or model by looking at the VIN # to even look for a motor(if one can be found).
The1st 12 # of the Vin is YU7FE5015T00.
Can anyone help with the Year and model (I assume FE 501), and is this bike worth "trying" to salvage by looking for a rebuilt or factory motor?
About what should I expect to spend on the motor, if I come across one?

Thanks for any info!!!

Plastics, gas tank, etc all there?

I'd try to sell the rolling chassis as a whole, part it out, or failing that; take it back to who gave it to you. :D

Thanks for the info. Damn, most of my info was right on this site, but I didn't dig too deep before posting the question.
I'm almost positive that it is the electric start model. The parts crate has the head with valves and cam. It looks like there is just a cam bearing missing. Also there is a starter in there.
Soooo, the magic question is, do you feel that it is worth salvaging , and how hard are these motors to come by?

Thanks again.

Check the classifieds here, and also check ebay. shouldn't be too hard to find. Put your location in your profile, you just might find that some one close to you has what you want.

Thanks...I'll keep my eye on the classifieds here and eBay. I also contacted the nearest dealer to find out what other model year engines would fit. I read that 96 and earlier had premature engine failure because of no oil pump for valves and cam. It actually relied on the timing chain to transfer oil?

Yours is a 1996 FE501:

If the frame has 4 front mounting points for the engine, then you'd want to look for a kickstart only engine, if it has 2 mounting points on the down tubes, then you can fit an electric start engine.l

This reads as though if there is 2 mounting points on the down tubes I can put either a kicker or an electric start motor on this frame. Am I correct?
Does anyone know where I can get info on what model year(s) FE 501 motors have the same mounting patterns that will fit on this frame?

Thanks again.

You can most likely very easily adapt a whole range of engines to this frame. Altough, with a frame made for an e-start, I would definitely look for an e-start engine. Look through the parts manuals that I linked you to to get an idea of what changes over the years. (You'll find that it's very little...)

RE: Re: RE: Is It Worth It ????

That's good to know. Thanks!
I found a complete top end for this bike. Same year, brand new piston(never put in), good price.
Now to find the crankcase, which I'm sure is the hard part.
I can't wait to get this thing running. I also have a '73 Iron Head Sportster in the works too. Too much at once!
Thanks for all the help thus far.!!!!!!

RE: Re: RE: Is It Worth It ????

This may cause an uproar, but here I go anyway..... If it was me I would probably attempt to fit a two stroke engine like a CR or KX500 to the frame, then you have a one of a kind bike. My comment may be influenced by the fact that I am getting pretty tired of having to tear my 2000 fc501 engine down to work on it. It is in parts right now.... One of the transmission gears shed a good chunk of a tooth and wreaked havok.

RE: Re: RE: Is It Worth It ????

I like that way of thinking, only prob appears to be that the CS sprocket on a CR or KX is opposite to a berg. so some swingarm mods are probably in order. an old Husky 360 would fit the bill though, or a wrecked KTM 300 - 380 if you could get the swingarm as well, but then it may been some bushing / modding.

Two of a kind, we already have a Berg/KTM 500 2t down here
