Hi, i have all but signed on the dotted line for a new 07' FE 450e. 90% of my riding will be on-road, to and from work (30k's each way). And will probably only hit the trails every 2-3 weeks. Will this bike be ok with this or should i be looking at something else. I really like the Bergs but don't want to go down the wrong path. Cheers.

Regarding 90% onroad, consider 550, not 450.
SM wheels are always an option!

Cheers, Goran

mmmmm id also suggest one of the bigger bikes if its goin to be used as transport.

I have the same issue. I have the 2002 FE400. What parts are going to need care if I use it onroad daily?

I wondered the same thing as i enjoy riding mine to work occasionally. asked the same question as you guys have, the answer I got was it was ok as long as some kind of knobby was on the rear. i am riding with Perelli's that are not d.o.t certified. as long as there is some give somewhere between the road and your clutch you should be alright. I will tell you one thing to remember. I am assuming the maintenance schedule is the same on the newer bergs as my 99 fe400. Hrs on the road accumulate fast, and if valve adjustments are 15 hrs apart like on the older models, you'll spend alot of time with a feeler gage in your hand. Again not sure about the new models but on the older ones the exhaust valves aren't easy to get to with the radiator on. If you don't like to maintain your bike at the correct intervals, a berg may not be for you, as valve adjustment and oil changes are critical. I know it sounds like I'm talking you out of a berg, but if you diligent and keep up with the normal maintenance required you won't be sorry. You'll have a bike you'll be very happy with buying, especially off the road.

Riding on the road daily is gonna be similar to driving a car as far as parts wearing. i would think the drive train (sprockets, chain, chain tension, and tires) would need eyeballed often, as well as wearing brake pads. Not sure if the higher speed adding more heat to the wheel bearings would make them wear faster, but check them and as soon as it looks like they are going bad replace them as talon hubs are not cheap. One thing i noticed last summer from riding on the road is that my rear sprocket bolts kept loosening, locktite them good as a loose sprocket will destroy the hub too. I agree that if your going to be doing alot of riding on the road a 550 or 650 would be better as my 400 motor vibrates like hell at 60 mph on the road. I guess it depends on what type of off roading you'll be doing. single track the 450 is a good choice, but if your desert or open area riding I'd definitely get a 550 or bigger.

I think i'll choose the bus to go to the town! Afterall, I bought the Berg for what is made to do: off road
