So the intake roar is quite pleasant on my '09 FE450 for a little while, then it becomes annoying as I am trying to commune with nature while I am blasting white-knuckled through the trees.

As an experment, I took a piece of perforated metal to use as a template, laid in on the underside of the seat where it would be above the air intake, and proceeded to drill a few hundred small holes (1/8"). I placed some tape around the drill to use as a depth stop so it wouldn't drill too far into the foam.

Results? It is quieter, a simple one beer fix. Now I can here myself screaming in my helmet as I wack the throttle.

Huh...? I'm kinda clueless what you just did without showing pics.

Did you drill the underside of the seat with series of small holes, just slightly but not through the seat? So there are holes in the seat exposing the seat foam and it somehow muffles the intake noise down now? Interesting.

I, on the other hand enjoy now the absolutely ridiculous intake bark with cutted shrouds exposing the gap between seat and shroud to suck in more air and also the seat has a nice 15x15cm hole right above the air filter to be able to suck your nuts in when blasting WOT.

Thats a good idea, so with the holes, you allow foam to absorb sound. I have been using weather strip taped to the outer edge of bottom of seat to seal the gap, but it does decrease flow and your perf takes a few hp hit.. I am going to go get a drill and drill holes to see if the foam-absorbing works - can you snap a quick pic of what you did?

Why not just wear ear plugs? I do that with all my bikes, I can't ride without 'em even with stock exhaust!
These bikes lack proper airbox so why decrease the airflow in the motor even more with sealing?

Correct. Not a huge difference but it is noticeable.

I ride with ear plugs, and the only thing I can hear from the bike is the exhaust.
