This past weekend I tried a KTM 250 2 cycles, as you know, I am a big fan of 4 cycles engines, I hate the noise, the smoke, the oil in the gasoline, but I have to say It handles just amazing, I am small just 1.73 cm and I weight 68 kg, I drove much more faster than in my Husa, I am really thinking about a ktm 300 electric start, knowing the disadvantage I have over a 4 cycle engine, what do you think for my size, you all know I am a big fan of Husaberg, I have been waiting for the new 09.

My experience after 15 years not riding I bought my Husa, so I didn´t had any feedback on other bikes, that 250 is amazing it has almost the power of my FE 450 and at very low weight, what would you do?????

A buddy of mine about your size ride an E start 250 and loves it. nothing like ann E button when you stall it on an off camber!

hi i have ride the new 2008 300exc and i recommend it because the ktm

buy a 300EX [C] ... thats what i did , and this thing rips !!

I've had my 300 for 4 years now ( 2004 300 EXC).
Its got just over 400 hrs/20,000 kms on it.....I cant say enough good things about them....I'll be buying an 09 300 I think

I rode an 08 300 the other day and couldnt believe how smooth they are- both in power delivery and lack of engine vibes compared to the earlier ones

Hi,
We recently conducted a test ride on all the 08 KTM EXC's (except the 250RFS), and two of us are Berg owners. They are all great bikes, but a lot depends on where you ride, how you ride, and whether the bike is for race or social purposes. Testers went from expert to intermediate, so should be able to relate to at least one.The report is at www.eatmydirt.com.au., so take a look and let me know what you think.

It all depends upon where you ride and what you are looking for. I have ridden and raced everything from 125 2Ts and 500+ 4Ts, and placed all of them in the top 10 overall at enduro (time-keepers and ISDE format) and HS races. Each bike has it's forte, and I love riding them all. It has been said that if the race is won in the turns, then ride a 2T, if the race is won in the straights (accelerating) then ride a 4T. While I find that to be somewhat true, I also find that 2Ts tend to have the advantage below 20 mph and the 4T has the upper hand above that. Another thing I have noticed is that I prefer the 2T on the rough terrain and the 4T on the smoother terrain.
I am in a position in life to ride most any bike I want, I have chosen the Husaberg because it does so many things well. I must admit though that I recommend the KTM 250 2T offroad bikes to anyone because they do nothing poorly.
If you believe the reports that we are seeing on the 2009 Hbg (which I tend to believe), it looks like the new 'bergs will raise the bar for all bikes.

i dunno, at 1.73cm tall even the 2-smoker's gonna be too big

amazing report

I think I need to ride the 300 for a better opinion, like the report say "Each individual rider have their own tastes", I look at the times they did, and for example Garry Dukes an expert rider and about my size and weight, did the best time on the 300 was 3.47 min, and 3.48 on the 450, I can not compared with him been a professional rider, and either the other riders that are a lot more big and heavy, think better way to choose is riding both bikes 300 and 450 to reach a better decision for myself.

the reason choosing this 2 bikes is because I ride on high altitudes here in Mexico we reach almost 4000 mts.

the 250 I tried was on Valle de Bravo that is on 1800 mts, so the engine was perfect, but I could not imagine on 3000 or more, that is way the 200 and 250 are discarded for my decision¡¡ even so the lighter side and size of the bikes could help my riding style, but I would say the 300 almost same weight and more power make a better combination for me.

Cheers and thanks for the info

Ricardo

Hi Rica, I got my 08 KTM 300xcw (estart) about 6 months ago and I have over 70 hours and over 1000 miles on it. This bike is awesome and has loads of power but is very easy to ride. In my opinion the 300 is easier to handle than the 250 because it makes so much low end power. I am much larger than you and it will haul me up just about anything with no problem at all. I plan on keeping my 501 to dualsport and I may look to get an 09 or 2010 Berg, but if you want the best bike going right now you will not be dissapointed with the 300.

what configuration do the aussie exc's come with? We do not get the exc 2T's any longer. We get the XC with TC forks and a CR gearbox, and the XCW with the OC forks and WR gearbox (and the odo/computer).

Hi,
I couldn't find any detailed info on the Aussie EXC transmission ratios (or the USA models), other than primary and final drive figures which dont help much. SMCS may be able to help if he reads this (he is a Berg/KTM dealer). Same deal with the forks sorry. 48mm WP, but thats not much help as both your models appear the same. Aus specs available at www.ktm.com.au

Ricardo - Certainly riding the individual models is the best way to guage the most suitable bike. Garry has superbly set up bikes, and we were all very suprised to see how close he came to his Berg times on the special test. Basically what he is saying 300 vs 450, is that while the 300 performs extremely well, it was a more intense bike to ride, and therefore more tiring than the 450. Universally I think the opinion was that the 450 was more stable than the 300 through the rough stuff.

Previous to the test, I was thinking about going back to a 300 2T (had one before the Berg 450), but having ridden them back to back, I have converted to four strokes for good. Bring on the 09.

This Sunday I am testing a 300 2008, many friends have told me that that they are going to take thier friendship away, making noise and smoke jajaja, not seriously many with more experience than I said that is much more tired to ride on a 2 stroke engine, one of them all ready rode the 300 and is convinced to stay with 4 stroke engines, so I will listen to every thing my friends want to say but the last decision will be mine after riding this 300 beast¡¡¡

I will Informed my decision next Monday, I had been looking the pictures of the Husaberg 09 and all I can say is don´t look anything else until I can see in person that bike and off course riding it¡¡

just look at this

Well I have a result, I tested the 2 bikes the 450 and the 300, I was able to make a time track on both bikes, the result after riding them is that I felt more faster on the 300 but actually I had better times on the 450, I felt lighter the 300 more agile, but like I said the clock does not lay.

I had to say that I also test my Husaberg and I made better times than in the KTM 450 almost 1 second

My plan is to keep a few months more my bike and go after the new 09.

Cheers

Ricardo

Rica,

Timing on a known track is the only way to differentiate between the bikes. You have basically come to the same conclusions as with the EMD test we did. The faster you feel doesn't neccessarily mean faster times. The four strokes get the power to the ground in a more tractable way, especially in the rougher tracks. The two strokes are more flickable through the tight stuff, but again this doesn't mean smooth.

The two strokes are still a real fun bike to ride, but I find them a lot more fatiguing. Its good to see that our Expert rider drew the same conclusions (he is actually sponsored by this forums "SMCS" - and a Berg rider).

KTM's are great bikes and over the last ten years have gained massive ground in Australia, hopefully the same will occur with the 09 Berg. Good choice Rica.
