Some of you may remember that I attempted a total rebuild of my 2002 650, and today was the big day, the day of the first test ride!! I have never had a more stressfull ride than now, before I did this rebuild and learnt a huge amount about how an engine worked, I just cruised around, molesting the engine and not caring at all, untill the engine usually blew up (once did about 5000km on a 97 Husky without an oil change :) )

But now all I can think about is tappet locknuts coming off and getting jammed inbetween the cam chain, or the main bearing going because I could of measured the axial play wrong, an oil channel plugged because I uses to much liquid seal,... there's a million things I am thinking about!

But much to my surprise the engine didn't blow up after a couple of miles, done about 40km now and no problem at all with the engine, changed the oil after 20 miles and there was a lot of little metal pieces and pieces of liquid seal, but I've been told this is normal after a rebuild. There's no funny sounds coming from the engine, all seems to be working perfectly!!

Only problem was after 40km I crashed in the middle of traffic, the starter motor bolts had vibrated loose, letting the starter move a bit backward, so creating an oilleak, oil spilled on my back tyre and there i went, a classic lowsider, luckily no damage done, only my ego was hurt :)

Thanks again to everyone who helped me and answered my questions during my rebuild!

well done BB! let's hope you have some luck this time. either way, having done it once you could rebuild it even better the next time!

the only way you will get over your paranoia is to put miles on the bike till you forget it.
and next time you go to wales via east anglia, remember to drop the bloody engine off to me!

regards

Taffy
