Hi Guys

Does anyone know what the timing advance should be at idle speed ?
The doc says the total advance should be about 36° @ 6000rpm but that's kinda hard to check in your garage.

I had an 03 501 once upon a time, and i dont ever recall needing to look into the timing. as a matter of fact, i think the 03 had electric ignition and didnt require timing adjustment. But im not a mechanic. anyway i have seen a cheap RPM meter for bikes somewhere, when it comes to me ill let you know..

Thats it, the trailtech vapour instrument thingy has a rmp mter built in and there are cheaper versions usually on ebay, cheaper vrsions meaning exactly the same product, different paint/name!, much much cheaper.Hope that helps.

coastie you can set the timing static i guess but you must find the correct TDC and take it from there. you MUST have heard of the lines being wrong?

Taffy

Yeah Taffy the lines on mine are out also. Actual TDC is about 7° or so to the right of the other 2 lines when looking at it.
I've scribed another line and wanna put a strobe on it and see where it is at idle speed.
As you know there's not much adjustment anyway but I just wanna check that its not too advanced as I've recently put in a new stator and it's been backfiring a little when trying to start.
I pretty much just threw it in the middle of the slots - similar to where the old 1 was.

but the only time the marker settles when strobing IS at full advance!!! thats why i say it like that?

Taffy

Yeah OK. I've never actually strobed it but I thought it would be stable around idle speed as well as up top.
