hey guys got a 99 fe600 and the only way i can start it is if i flick my kill switch back and forth while cranking it the switch is not dodgy i get spark the whole time but will only start when i flick the swtch any ideas oh and when i put a new plug in i dont have to for the first 3 or 4 starts any one have some ideas...?

cheers doug

You 100% on the switch not being dodgy? I once had the kill on my jetski full of hornets that you couldn't see from the outside. Try disconnecting the orange kill circuit wire temporarily from the CDI/coil unit to prove that the problem is definitely not in the kill switch circuit.

nope not the switch i put a new plug in and it works fine for the first 10 or so starts then you have to start flicking it back and forth well i got it down pat now tho i dont have to flick it back and forth any more i just crank it over for a few secs then then flick it across and off she goes
i dont know what to do about it

and also how far should the spark be able to jump when im cranking it im only getting about 5mm of spark from the plug to the head is that right
99 fe 600

How about the plug cap? Those are supposed to be replaced every so often. Have you checked it for tightness, and Kilo Ohm resistance.

yep have replaced the ignition lead and is very firm on the plug i was thinking if my battery was getting sad that would give a poor spark when cranking woulnt it...yes....no....?
hmmmmm ok somthing else to check

Hello 44014,
Your description tells me the trouble is that of a lean fuel mixture. When you momentarily activate the kill switch while cranking you are in effect inducing a rich fuel mixture as the result of an ignition misfire.

Kind Regards,
Dale

Ps
Also by killing the ignition you are allowing the starter motor to build momentum.

hmmm ok ummm you know more than me dale but i have had it on a ega at tafe ( iam a 4th year app mechanic ) and i have the exact oppasite problem it runs very rich at idle like when it is hot you can see some black smoke somtimes could this have a simalar effect

cheers doug

Running mixtures and starting mixtures are quite different.

Example:
If your idle mixture is set rich this will force you to run the throttle stop in (ie raise the slide). Such a condition will reduce the inlet vacuum (ie carburetor signal) during slow cranking. Such a condition will result in a lean cranking mixture.

The above is merely one example as many possibilities with a similar theme exist.

Hope this helps.

Best Regards,
Dale

Ps
Why do you have your pilot settings so rich as to belch soot?

i dont know we tryed leaning it out at tafe but coulnt get it to do it im not sure what has been done to the bike but when i first bought it the throttle responce was amazing like an exsplosian from idle and now it doesnt do it
and it also runs out of fuel when going flat out this is another post of myn but i dont know if they are related or not
thanks for your time dale much appreciated

cheers doug
