Hey guys; gotta question for you berg mechanics!

My husband has an 05FE450; well maintained, valves always checked & adjusted on time, oil & filter regularly changed, etc.
A few days ago we were riding (bike running great) & he had a little mishap-no biggie but the bike landed on its side-a little upside down but more on its side. It could have ran for about 1 minute until he turned it off though. The bike locked up-wouldn't start. (there's a story there!)

Got it home and there was 1 cup of oil in exhaust pipe, oil on top of cylinder. Took carb and exhaust pipe off. With spark plug in, decompression lever out the engine won't turn 360 degrees w/o locking up. Pulled decompression lever in and engine turns over like it should but w/i 5 strokes spark plug is dripping in oil. W/i 1 minute the spark plug is soaked. Bike still doesn't run.

Is this a pressure release ball bearing and spring problem? Tried draining oil but it keeps returning-how do we drain completely? Any ideas? Kinda stumped now. Thanks!!

at worst you have either a broken crank, broken piston or bent rod.

i take it you checked the air filter has not fillied with oil.

Crank bearings,if it ran at high rpm for a minute on its side. Cylinder full of oil is the kicker! Hope I am wrong.

nothing sounds to me like a mechanical problem ...yet. one minute running semi upside down is an awful long time. i doubt it would have enough fuel to run that long. but it doesn't take very long to pump a lot of oil into the air intake. and it sounds like you don't have it all out just yet. make sure there's no oil left in the frame and intake boot as well as the breather hose. with the kill switch depressed and the plug out, throttle wide open, kick it thru about twenty times or until there is no sign of oil in the cylinder. put in a new plug and try it. if no luck, ck the plug for oil and repeat.

She says the engine turns over normally when the decomp. lever is pulled in. How could that happen with a broken crank? I don't think there is anything wrong other than it is going to take awhile to get all the oil out of the top end so the plug doesn't foul.

In addition to cleaning out the carb and frame I wonder if removing the left side engine cover, then reed valve, and leaning the bike to the left would allow the oil in the crank area to "drain out".

you gotta just keep kicking it over and over until it kicks with the plug in etc. you are trying to get oil out of the squish area and into the exhaust ports etc and out the engine.

you may have to go through 2-3 plugs by simply kicking and then pulling it to wipe it and put another pre-run one in.

i always keep 2 plugs that were in the bike when it ran 100%.

my best suggestion is that you do the above and then stick a tow rope around the right footrest to the back of the car and then bump it behind the car. you'll create a bit of smoke but all will be good....

Mrs Berg,

I see that you are on line. Would you join me in the lounge to discuss your problem? This is a common problem.

First thing you need to do is drain the engine oil as per usual and refill it with oil as it sounds as though you've drained a good portion of it already.

If you haven't already, pull the air filter off. You will find a lot of oil in the air intake boot. Sop that up with some paper towels, and wipe out the frame area with paper towels until you have gotten all the oil out. The air filter could be soaked too so replace it with a fresh one.

Follow the others instructions, with the plug out, kick the bike over repeatedly with the kill switch depressed, you may want to lay a rag over the spark plug hole so that oil doesn't blow all over the place.

Pull the float bowl nut and drain the bowl, the fuel will look amber because it's full of oil, it got in there through the main air jet and pilot air jets. Replace the nut, not too tight, and turn on the fuel.

Now try and kick start the bike like you normally would when cold. Like Taffy said, it may take a few plugs to get it going. Once it starts just let it idle for a while, it's going to smoke a lot as the oil burns off.

It should be fine.

Thanks alot Dale! I tried the lounge & (I know I'm lame!) I wasn't quite sure how it works...sorry I tried replying but I must have been doing something wrong! Oops. I understand what you're saying above and we're on it!

Thanks for all the replies guys-

:) yeh yeh , ok i misread the Q , i got it into my head that it would'nt turn after draining the oil out
we all have mental blocks
me more than most

hmmm....so told my husband the info last night and here's where we're at: carb is off, exhaust off basically everything but the engine is off and cleaned. the engine still won't turn over at all unless the decompression lever is pulled in. with the lever pulled in we kick it over about 5 times then spark plug is dripping in oil again.
the only thing he hasn't done from what you guys have mentioned above is actually drain all the engine oil. that's the next but this isn't looking good...
is there something i missed?
thanks again!!

With the spark plug out, not installed, does the engine turn over? If so, leave the spark plug OUT, and using the kickstarter, kick it through the stroke repeatedly until there is no oil mist coming out the spark plug hole. Don't reinstall the plug until you get the oil out of the top end.

Once you get to that point, you can reinstall the sparkplug and the engine should go through it's stroke.

where is all the oil coming from then ?, if you have the carb off and are turning it over and the plug is still getting saturated, have you taken the plug out and given it a really hard kick, if you have tried this and are still getting problems, take the tank/battery off turn the bike upside down without oil ,without plug ,without carb, without exhaust and wind it over, it has to be clear of oil then, but if you find that when you have topped the oil back up in the crank cases and you get an oil soaked plug again , then the only other thing you can look at is the possibility of something mechanical being wrong .

Q when you kick the bike over (with decomp) does it feel stiff in any way or maybe a little more difficult to wind over than normal ?

thanks all- with decomp in and i kick the bike over, no it doesn't feel stiff in any way-feels normal.
I'll take this info home again tonight and see what the boss thinks. thanks again-

do you have a gas cooker?

if you have an oiled plug NEVER wire brush it but instead hold it over a gas flame on the cooker. you'll get a light coloured flame and then after a minute or two you'll get a gentle burst of energy which means that the oil caught fire and burned off. oil doesn't spontaniously combust. just the opposite - take a good book in the kitchen mrs berg!

I just wanted to get back to you guys & say thanks for all the tips. Yep, she runs! Did everything mentioned above practically and opened up everything we could to get the bike to drain. After draining for about a week, he put it back together and its running!
