Good evening all. I need some assistance. I have a 2001 FC 550, it runs like a ***** ape however, it has an oil leak. The leak is coming from a screw head near what I thin is a freeze plug. Its near the top of the motor in the kick start side. It turns freely but won't get tight. I have not backed it out because I don't know what's behind it. It only leaks when oil is warm. I put rtv on the screw head to slow the leak. Can someone tell me what this screw is for and how to stop the leak. I've attached a photo for you all to see what I'm talking about.
Thaksin you in advance
Jake

The pic doesn't really show the location but I'm going to bet that is the bolt that the cam tensioner blade pivots on. You won't be able to unscrew it as there is a nut on the other end inside the motor. I smeared some rtv on mine before I installed it. Seems ok. You might clean up the area with brake cleaner and try some oil safe rtv.
Btw, No freeze plug. I think what you are looking at is the cam bearing cover which come off when you remove the valve cover.

If you go to this site you can download a spare parts manual and a service manual that might come in useful.

yes, just try to locate the piston at tdc to take spring pressure off the cover.
clean the cover and case surfaces and wipe a slight amount of rtv on both, reassemble, let cure overnite.

Thanks to all for the input and advice. Last question should I assume that something is broke in there since the bolt is loose.

Jake

I don't think that you need to assume something is broken. If the nut was off the back, the parts would be bouncing around inside the engine. Hopefully, just replace the nylon nut.

Hi Jake

That screw hold the tensioning blade of the cam chain.

The leak can mean that the aluminium of the casing has some wear and it leaks, or something like that, but it can also means that it's not very tight, and you don't want that bolt to come out !!!

I would try to rotate the screw, if it's loose, you will need to take the head out to tight it back.

Gentlemen thanks for the help. I got it done today. The nut was only on by two threads. Replaced the copper washer added some rtv and no more leak... do you all think a valve adjustment is necessary since the rocker arms came off the valves?

It's safer my friend .. just spend a little more time with the lady
