Newbie question, Hi all just bought a 03 FS650E (hope ive got that the right way round) and dont really no much about them as ive just parted with my superbike and got this beast instead, im having a few probs with the electrics such as, the starter dont work and the horn and indicators dont work the lights are poor and the brake light dont work, now the battery is needing replace as its knackered any idea if this could be the cause of my probs.

Also with a new battery will the bike start of the starter button when cold as the guy i bought it off said not only kicking it keeps taking chunks out my leg

Any help appreciated

Phil.

You may want to start with a new battery and check all of the wiring and fuses.
As far as the starter goes, it is mainly used for a restarter, not so much for cold starts.
Both the starter and charging systems are a bit suspect on these bikes. There are pages upon pages of material relating to both subjects. Try to use the search fuction for your basic questions.

It would be better (psychologically) to just accept from the beginning that the bike has a hot restarter, not an cold e-starter. But do not get discouraged, they can be tuned to get them to start with one easy kick. or as some would/could also prove, by hand! take bergers advice and read all of the copious amounts of info on this very subject. and read the posts on how to kick start these things... it seems that up till 03 they all take a certian technique. It has been hashed and rehashed so many times.... good stuff...

sweet bike though...

The YTZ7S batteries are 6 amp with cold crank of 130, the original YTX5L-BS is 4 amp with a cold crank of 70 (yoshie). Use an Optimate battery charger (see handy tools). The YTZ7S is a new-generation Gell-Cell battery and is the same size.

Ciao Phil,
as mine 2002 model, battery needs to be recharged like Taffy wrote when the bike is in "garage".
All issues that You describe, I have in mine.
I do not use estart ever.
I have lights when I the motor is running. I barely have blinkers and brake light when the motor is running.
I do not use charger cause I do not really need the battery in that sense.
To make all work as 2004 -> models, there are things to change if You really need them.
I use to start it a kick or two.
Use decomp, find the point when compression starts to resists , and turn up with the pedal, leave the throttle and decomp alone, and kick all the way through.
When it is cold ( <0 celcius) , I use choke. Otherwise never.

buona fortuna and no worries !

knackered

mmmmmmmm!

ok so whereabouts in the UK are you from?

regards

Taffy

Hi guys thanks for the info so i need an optimizer for when the bike aint been used, youl have to bear with me as im still learning :) i presume i need the optimizer as the bike doesnt charge the battery like a road bike does when running?
