Hi All, I've purchased a 2001 FE501E.

I think it a mesmerizingly good looking bike, lol. Not to mention its equipment spec and heritage!

It was claimed that this one has never been off road, it certainly is clean.

It is currently not running, but has banging compression, so I reckon it will be reasonably easy to get it going again... at least I hope so?

I've spent a fair few hours searching and reading already, look forward to all things Husaberg.

One question... a Mate of mine suggested you pronounce the name "who's-berg"? I thought huss-a-berg? Dunno...

Cheers,

Thanks for the welcome! Huss-a-berg it is then! Looking forward to getting this beast going. It's love...lol.

Hi who,
welcoming you to the forum. My first impressions on the nice pics you posted:
  • tail light looks strange
  • scratched swingarm - maybe the bike was offroad
  • Is the front tire imbalanced - the area around the forks looks a little more flat, than a circle... just asking because I managed to do the same to my rims too :p

Very nice looking bike - when it feels that the compression for starting is too high - something with your autodecomp must be wrong - a usual problem with the bergs...
Regards,
EDE

Hi all,
Tail Light looks oem? Dunno about the swingarm, it'll be fine! The tyre was flat, I've put air in it now and it looks normal :)

Must put chain on my list of things to do

Decompression on the starter motor is not working, so that will go on the list as well.

Cheers.

Hi Who:
I really hate to rain on your parade. I really do. Before you spend any money on an 01 you need to read every post ever written about 01's.

If you are not worried about trying to get it to start on the button then you will be happy. An 01 can be successfully kick started. Just make sure the kick start activated decompression system is intact and in good working order. I would get Taffmeisters most up to date jetting kit and maybe the dual valve spring kit and be done.

Trying to get an 01 it to e-start is nearly impossible. The first major hurdle you will be up against is that some of the internal gears have a different tooth profile than the late 02-08's thereby causing too much drag on the motor. You would need to change the:

Counter balancer, balance drive shaft, drive gears on balancer drive shaft and crank shaft and also the outer clutch basket.

With that being said Taffmeisters has been able to get an 01 to start on the button without internal gear changes by doing the following:

"1)beefy starter motor - extra strong anyway!
2) CTZ7s or YTZ7s battery
3) repair the starter gears which would normally be a stronger sprague bearing spring on either the same bearing or, if the teeth are flattening off; a new sprague bearing. even slightly flattened off, the 400-501s will start if all else is well.
4) iridium spark plug like the IXU24 denso plug or the DCPR8EIX by NGK
5) later 08 cam on the 2001-2003 650s, the others don't have to worry so much. this has poor cylinder filling when cranking (which is good news) and is easier for the valve springs (less resistence).
60 fit the later auto decomp and a stronger spring or re-tension the original. this is thee Number 1 thing to do....decomping!!!!
7) DVSK like the ones I sell or KTM. the Kibblewhites are too soft for the 400-501 but OK just about for the 650. Dual valve spring kit.
6a) face the inlets especially, cut the valve seasts, square the stems etc. look out for cupped tappet pads, cam follower bearings clonking, cams that are spalling.
correct ignition timing marking a new white line for TDC and using a timing strobe light.
9) major work with the carb. So new atomiser, needle, O rings, fuel valve, smaller choke jet, change the slide to one we sell, change the PJ, set the float height, fit a variable choke up to the handlebars.
9a) you can't have a cruddy air filter = get a new one!
10) valve clearances are 1/6th of a turn. if you stand by the back wheel, you should just make out the mechanic making a 'tic-tic' as they "morse code" the rocker arm.

as a nice touch, use the 2004 solenoid mounting bracket and fit the solenoid that's out on the end of the solenoid infield under the air boot for cleaner lines.

with the slide change above, the dell orto is back in the game. however, the keihin is simply a better carb."

If you wanted a second generation Berg then you should have looked for an 04-08 model as these have the bugs worked out.

Hopefully you did not pay too much for it. If it were me I would concentrate on dialing in the carb and ignition timing and leaving the e-start be for awhile.

The next upgrade may be the 04-08 camshaft and autodecompression device.

You will probably want to replace the timing chain and or at least the camshaft follower bearings right away as these can be a failure ready to happen due to the severity of the cam ramp up and pin diameter of the CFB's (both of which have been updated on 04-08 models).

When you ride it for the first time you will immediately notice that as soon as you crack the throttle it wants to abruptly lurch forward. This is the cam. If you replace with the 04-08 cam it smooths things out nicely.

If you just don't want to deal with an 01 then there is the option of dropping it off at Ned's in Cottonwood Arizona. Its the Official 01 Repository. Just throw it over the fence in his back yard. If you sign over the title to him he will give you a beer.

Hi Husabutt, You are not raining on my parade, that is precisely the sort of info I'm after.

I've been thinking strip the engine, inspect and do whatever needs to be done, the info you have provided is great!

I know the motor has a new stator fitted, new inlet valves, the bore was said to be mint. If you can think of any other known issues-solutions please feel free to list them.

I'm aware the 2001 501's have their issues, but this does not scare me off. I've noticed the R/H chain, L/H kickstarter configuration is used on many KTM, gas gas, Husqvarna, and engines such as the 700cc two-stroke intimidator, so if the motor is not economical to repair-bring up to spec, I might exchange with something else. I only paid $500 Australian dollars for this, so my budget has a fair bit of room to move!

Thanks for the input! Cheers.

I have loads of videos that will help on my facebook page. things like getting the kickstart assembly back in, fitting the later auto decomp and my modified spring, ignition timing.

if you insuist on doing anything without it running....wrong move altogether BTW, then please just remove the head and the left cover. it's not a bath but it is a bed bath and therefore nearly as good and not a frcation of the hassle.

loosen and remove, oil and replace the long bolt across the front of the engine and also the SA pivot pin.

cheers

Thanks Taffy, I'm glad I landed on this forum, some good people who don't mind offering a bit of help.
I always end up with oddball bikes, cars etc...lol.
So if I do all the listed-recommended mods mods, will I end up with a reliable machine?
Cheers.

well no, reliabile is in a complete rebuild with everything measured and perhaps changed but you are lookijng at it arse about face.

it is low mileage, the bottom end has certainly got a good while left in it. you need to work around the outside of it. that is why i give you the bed bath analogy.

get it starting and running sweetly. you'll spend plenty of money just getting that done right and sweet.

work on taking the head off if you like and putting in DVSK, getting the ADC working, check for wear. get all the stuff eric wrote above done and then put the left cover and head back on and start it up.

Taffy

Okay Taffy will do, I've been on your site, and will place an order for some goodies shortly.
Seems you have everything I will need to accomplish stage one! Excellent!
I've noticed the cables supplying volts to the starter are a little lean gauge wise, so they will be replaced, R1 04 starter motor looks like it will go in?
I'll make a list of jobs and post it up for your opinion in the next few weeks.
Thanks to everyone who has imputed. Cheers.

you need a starter motor bracket on top of the Husaberg bracket if you're going that route. so remember that our price for the beefy includes the bracket which we value at £15.

best thing you can do is to get the special choke cable and then talk to me about my bergbooster jetting kit?

I have specifically got this going spot on on my FE501e 2003. so I'm looking to get this de-snagged with customers first. then i'll spread it to other CCs etc.

that might be worth an email to me. [email protected]

Taffy

I found a busted electric start motor in my box of free stuff along with half the stuff HusaButt mentioned. Hoping the guy before did all this. if convert to kickstart only, loose battery, run lights off mag (keep street legal plates),,,,, im feeling good. However couldnt emagine kicking it over not knowing if it would ever start. Thanks HusaButt, i bet you know my 650 or old owner.

kickstart only Flashbugger? that would be a shame! stick with it, as eric says the info is there but you won't just stick a starter on it and have it all go right.

many a man before you has tried all this. a starter motor can try and turn the engine but it kills the battery straining against the decomp and if you boost the battery then the starter gears have to slip until you do the decomp.

regards

Taffy

I wasnt recommending convert to kickstart only, just stating that it was done to mine along with most the mods you guys are talking about and the thing starts 1st 2nd kick. Thats it,
