I need your advice, how I will change the oil on the street if I have an 450 or 550.I know it is totaly diferent kind of use beside off road, my dealer told me that I have to change at 20 hours or 2000 km, but I didn't trust him.
Berger, I know you didn't agree to use it on the road, but I cannot afford to have two diferent cycles for both areas.
Please, help me.

Hi Bob,

I commute on mine (FS650E) and change the oil at least every 10hrs using a quality synthetic. I can't offer expert advise saying that 20hrs is fine (or not), but I figure better safe than sorry and really it's not that expensive in the grand scheme (mind you my commutes are fairly short).

I do change it more frequently still when I've been on the race track (our local track is particularly dusty).

Cheers,
-Mike

The owners manual says change the oil every 3 hours but I'm lazy and change the oil every 8-10 hours. I use a medley of Redline, Motorex Synth or Delo400. I change the oil filter every other oil change.

If the bike was being mostly used only for racing then I would change the oil every 3 hours but for my four mile crosstown urban supermoto commute and occasional track day I think I can let it slide. 5000 miles and 200 engine hours later all is still very well.

I've been commuting about 4 days a week since late May this year. My trip's about 6 1/2 miles each way through city and suburb traffic. I change the oil every other weekend with Shell Rottella T 15-40. I was using the Rotella Full Synth, but have just switched to regular. Clean the little filter with qtips and simple green, and the big re-usable filter each oil change. No problems yet. By the way, the bike is a '98 501, so it's seen a full and happy life, and still running strong.

Thank you guys, you are the greatest. And fastest in answers, I can't believe that.
In the menwhile, I spoke with the enduro-cross vice-champ of Romania ( the dealer put me through ) , he has an 450, told me that he change the oil when he reached the 8-th full of gas when he is on-road, and at 3 hrs when he is off road.I don't know if it's written in the book of the cycle something like that, specially on road.He told me it is based on his calculation and the bike worked ok.
Also told me that 3 hrs are calculated not in normal hrs, but in metric, I don't know wht he meant.Do you?
Thanks, Bob.
