Husaberg 650 timing question (Solved rooky mistake)

Hello i have recently had problems getting the bike to run properly/at all after i removed and reinstalled the cam/cleaning carb etc.

Its hard to start and when it fires it only runs with throttle on and easily dies, and also getting pop sounds in the exhaust.

After thinking that it wasnt getting enough fuel ive cleaned the carb muliple times without success. so finally i decided to check to see if i made any misstake when reinstalling the cam.

So i put it in tdc, the two dots on the cam are aligned at the top on each side.

As u can see these are almost aligned, my question is if this is aligned enough, its not perfectly in the middle of the 2 dots but is it enough?

Hey huskyjw,

Your good on the crank markings, maybe turn crank a little clockwise to perfectly align. Depending on your year model, there should be two dots on your cam sprocket opposed to one another. These need to also align with the deck of the head. Refit the rocker cover and tensioner etc, turn the motor a few times then lift the rocker cover to check again. If everything lines up, your cam timing should be good.

With regard to the carb, which one is it? Lots of possibilities here but make sure for starters that the choke is not stuck on and functioning correctly. But see what happens after you know your cam timings correct....

Good luck

Did you align the cam gear dots with the edge of the cylinder head? Cam Lobes down?

Opps, I just noticed that Damo has already mentioned this.

Also sounds like a broken exhaust valve spring. The 650's seem to be the hardest on them.

I'm STILL the only person who times an engine like this so here goes.
while being "interested" in the dots, it is infact the flywheel and cam lobes you should be checking!!!

the flywheel turns clockwise and has a pulse/bump on it.

TDC
is when the leading edge of the 'bump' is in a straight line between the middle of the crank and the bottom edge of the ignition cover hole that is behind the crank or at 9 o clock.

get those 3 in a line and you have genuine TDC.

then

with the cam lobes UP, UP, UP, they should be symetrical with the top surface of the head.

after this, turn the crank 360d and fit the rocker cover.

your problem is probably jetting. this time of year they badly want a very large PJ AND the PS to be out a long way.

Appreciate the replies

So this is looking correct?

am i just overthinking or is one of the lobes pointing more upwards than the other one?

Correct. Looks OK to me.

With regard to the uneccessarily convoluted way of setting valve timing, whatever works for you I suppose but in this particular engine, the dots method really is the easiest way to do it and I don't really see how anyone can 'fluff' it. I guess if you are removing the cam on an older motor without the sprocket dots and wasn't planning on removing the side cover, I could then see the sense in it.

We're you having trouble with it before you removed the cam?

good!

No actually i decided to dismount it, partly because i was curious/wanted to learn about the engine and also because there was a weird sound that i heard when riding but i then realized that sound came from the rear sprocket which had lost one tooth! :)

the bike ran perfectly before so i guess maybe i should just have let it be but i learn something atleast ;)

I guess i have to put it back together and look more thoroughly in the carb and go back to the idea that its not getting the fuel that its supposed to.

Cool mate. Process of elimination....

You confident that the carb went back together correctly? Looks like Kokusan ignition so you should have the FCR carb. Check the silly things first like the hot start is not activated etc.

Be a good time to go through the carb to check all your jet sizes and adjustments. Few good threads on here about it all.

As well, it's fundamental to set your valve clearances correctly too. The 1/6th turn method I like and just make sure the cam is not in a position where the auto decomp is 'activated' while setting it.

I know you said it was fine beforehand but did you have a look at the valve springs while you were at it like Husabutt suggested?

So guys this is solved finally when reading an other post about the vaccum slide plate being correct. I had flipped it when cleaning the carb the first time which i realized now will block the fuel from coming through, except from the fuel coming from the acc pump. That explains why it only ran on throttle and had no idle. Rooky mistake but at least i have learned something by taking apart everything 25 times :D

Good job mate, glad to hear it. :)

It really is the best way to learn hey!

All the best
