how to test a digital speedometer cable

Hey Guys

Seeing that it's winter here I thought it would be good time to look a my electronic speedo cable issue on my 2005 fs650e. my issue is that sometimes in the morning (cooler temps) my speedometer reads erraticly. going down the highway crusing at around 110km's it will bounce from 0km's to 120km's. When it's warmer in the afternoon it reads perfectly.

Is there a way to check the electric speedometer cable using a voltmeter, what kind of sensor do they use for the pick-up. should I use an Ohm's reading or volts and if it's by volts how many?

Use an Ohmsmeter,the info is just a on/off contact when the magnet goes in front the sensor. No voltage

So If I were to just tape a magnet onto the sensor I should get 0.00 Ohms Or does it vary the amount of resistance vary with the speed.

What I would like to do is tape a magnet to the sensor and wiggle the wires to see if there's a break in them.

With no magnet,the contact is open so you will have Mega-ohms or a infinite value
When you present the magnet, the contact is closing and then you will have a value,not very much,maybe about 1 or 2 ohms
So yes you can tape the magnet on the sensor and see if you have variation in the value when you play with the cable

Check the distance between the magnet and the sensor. Too close will get you some funny readings, too far... Yeah I'll bet you know what happens then.
