I hear a whizzing / whirring sound coming from the engine while accelerating, I am wondering if this has something to do with quite a lot of metal shavings in the magnetic drain plug...

I suspect that it is possible that the cam chain has stretched beyond specs and I want to know how to inspect it for wear ?

I have access to the manual, but It just shows how to dismantle the entire engine - is there an easier way to inspect the cam chain / tensioner for wear ?

Remove the nut from the back of the tensioner being careful not to loose the spring & ball inside. Then remove the actual tensioner. The reason you remove the spring & ball first is so that the tensioner doesnt push all the way out.Just count the remaining clicks left on the tensioner to get an idea of where the cam chain wear is at. I would suspect something else as the 06 models have the DID chains which shouldnt wear that quick.

Anyone else ??

that whirring noise has turned out to be the crank gear for a few people so CHECK IMMEDIATELY the nut on the end of the crank!!!!!!!!!!!!

metal on the drain plug , replaced the cam chain , no more metal .

whirring , tighten the nut and ..... no more whirring .

Left or right side of the engine ? (from sitting on top of bike view).

just for anyone you should always talk about a bike from the riders perspective. i believe that goes for either side of the road OR the atlantic!

however for our cars we always say nearside or offside. nearside is the left of the car because it's the nearest side to the kerb. do you boys have that lingo in the car trade?

whilst i've not had this problem i understood that the nut wound up to the end of the thread but before it had tightened the nut. if this is true (can someone confirm this?) then it's unforgivable that none of you has been fitting a tab washer! a tab washer will take up .75mm or .030" which should hopefully amke a difference and added to that the tab washer itself will stop the nut coming undone! when you can buy 'two-for-the-price-of-one' you can't look it up!

all we're waiting for is someone to find a tab washer for the job!

as usual you're all waiting for me to sort it i suppose (a joke - ish...).

the nut should crush the gear between the shoulder on the crank and the nut itself. if someone cares to give me the crank o/d dimension i'll have a look through my box....

How many hours?
when i had this kind of metal shavings, my left main bearing was gone.
 @120hours
After complete rebuild, no shavings only metal dust.
Check your magnet each ride! i don't like shavings

Good luck
