How reliable is the oil reed valve ?

One of my concerns is precisely what will happen if some debris interfere with it...how will that affect the lubrification system ? thats my major concern...

Also, the reed seems to be made of thin plastic...how much of hard riding hours till we need to replace it ?

Dale would be best to answer the question. From what I have heard, debris in the valve would cause excessive blow by (oil consumption with increased exhaust smoke) There are replacement intervals in the service manual. My recommendation would be replacement if it is suspect or at time of overhaul.
 
Hi Chaps,

Debris caught behind the reed valve will only cause excessive oil blowout through the oil breather, thus very bad running if you've got the breather threaded straight through to the airbox. It is a pretty reliable little thing, but very easy to replace if anything does go wrong. I've pretty much replaced once a season but have one happily lasting just over 2 years.
