When valve lash measurement begins to increase - first this happens slowly, then much more rapidly (by this time they have gone pretty badly). Also the top end starts to rattle a lot!

Alternatively and to be on the safe side whip the cover off and check both with a good feel visually the rollers themselves. In fact this takes only about 30 minutes to do anyway (not including sealant curing). Do this at the 40-50 hour mark.

Cheers,
Simon

my bikes got more than 50 hrs on it, quite a bit more im pretty sure.

by rattling at the top end do you mean the bike shakes, or you hear a rattle when u rev high?

you will begin to hear excessive ticking in the top end and you valves will be hard to keep in spec,

Check them early (before 10hrs) more like 5 and try to fit the next size feeler guage in.

the metal will go through your motor and you will end up like me with toasted bearings (all of them) and a scored cylinder sleeve

the camchain you check as you would the final drive chain. pull out the rear spring from the tensioner THEN undo the tensioner assembly and remove. check how many 'teeth' are left on the tensioner - likely it'll be none. the button end will be shagged.

for the camchain, pull the rocker cover off and check the chain like you would on the final drive. i can assure you that the steel cam sprocket is bloody hard and probably won't be too bad. it's the chain that takes all the greif and as i've said before get the earlier husaberg HD chain.

comparison? go to my gallery and i have a picture of old chain next to new HD chain with 3 mm difference in length due to stretch.

to me there is no chance you don't need a camchain. as said before-i had the button head of the adjuster extended by 3mm in stainless steel. it means i can keep the camchain in good condition longer but also that it's not an excuse to get five years out of it. the chain is good for two seasons i guesstimate. if the tensioner helps support the stirrup this might extend it's life.

as for rockers? well mine are still excellent and my dealer has never done any upgrades! so speak as you find, right? touch wood.

I've seen your gallery posts, could you kindly update them with the part # or model year range that the older HD chain came in. ie. Any pre 2001 motor.

And/or is it part number 200 045-02, which is listed as being applicable to 96-2000??? 400's and 94-2000??? 501's. It is 78 links long, which I'm assuming that you cut to the correct length of 64 for your post 2000 model.
