hi new to the site,i live in the uk & i'am serouisly thinking about getting a road legal (enduro) berg, to do a bit of on/off road use as i love the look of them was thinking of a 400/450(with electric start)?heard lots of mixed reports,ie don't bother repairs & parts a problem,reliability etc.was looking at around a 2002/3/4 model.so i thought who better to ask than the experts you guys! so any help advice would be greatly appreciated.

welcome to UHE mate. i started by asking and looking. as you will see, we're not doom and gloom and love our bikes. if you can afford a 450 then a lot of the better buits are fitted standard. otherwise an old 400 from '01 to '03 can be bought quite cheap but you need to be aware that a few things need checking over. it's the old story: change it early for £200 or wait till it breaks and pay double.....

above you is the word search and put things in there. if not, have ageneral look around and later visit the doc on your left.

yeah spot on at least you did'nt want to put me off!looking at spending £1500-£2000,& was gathering info ready to buy this winter when hopefully a bargain is to be had?so will take you up on the offer of a call later!what are they like for parts & repairs compared to other enduros?
 
You should get an 03-04 FE450 for that sort of money. Just make sure it's been looked after, find out how many hours it's done etc.

I've got two of them and don't think I'l be changing any time soon.
 
you don't have to wait for the winter for a bargain. we're on the edge of a recesssion and good buya abound.

spares are available for everything so no problem there we just don't get the after market choices but as the yanlks would say "that will only start a pissing contest" and we refrain from such disgusting behaviour here ol' chap. what what!

hours on it? get what you can none of them are honest....

I have to be honest and say that your best bet is to go 03 or later, so that'll be an 03 400 or an 04 450. The 400 usually just runs and runs and runs and the 450, well it just runs and runs and runs too :wink:

They're usually great bikes. Neither of them need any modifications to be good and reliable and only rarely do the earlier 400s sometimes benefit from removal of counterbalancer for even less maintenance.

If you've got the money, then go for the 450 they're lovely bikes for trail riding and will start on the button every time.

If you're interested in one, I was trail riding with Gary Grover, a long standing dealer, the other weekend, and he was riding a used 04 450 that he was going to put on the showroom floor. I don't know the price or if it's gone, but give him a ring - 01635 30202. He's also always happy to give good honest advice too.
