Hi, all. I bought an 08 550 Berg to race the NORA/BSMC National series this year and done a couple of practices and 2 rounds on it already. Despite niggly problems (brake fade, oil leaks, slipper not slipping!) I can't help but think it's not the unreliable tractor it's made out to be! Loadsa questions to come and advice gonna be needed but for now i'll check out the forum and search facilities!!!

I dont think the veiw counter is totally accurate.... it was probably a lot more than 40 :D

welcome to the crew, i think each berg is its own, some are good and some problematic, get your stuff sorted and keep up on maintenece and it will be as reliable as anything else....this coming from a guy whos bike is more than a decade older than yours and has been nothing but relaible even with its oil leaks.....

I viewed 39 times and just now worked up the nerve to say, hello! :D
Welcome to the site and I hope you have a blast with your 550.

Howdy!
As far as compared to the older bergs the 08's are as reliable as a ball peen hammer when used for their intended purpose. When it comes to racing SM, I don't know that anything can be considered reliable anymore.
As far as the brakes and clutch, those are components that have likely been added to the bike. Not really sure you can knock the bike for that. As far as the oil leaks go, perhaps we could help with a little more info.

Welcome to the site.

Looks like a nice bike :D Hope you have as much fun I have with my 2008 Berg 8) Greets from Belgium

I've sorted the brake problem. I stripped and rebuilt the caliper and put some Motul RBF600 fluid in, all good now. Going to investigate the oil leaks as I have a few weeks break from racing. I've been told to give it a mid season main bearing refresh to be on the safe side. That's when all the questions will be coming as I may do it myself!!!

2nd time I've viewed your post... Btw, Hello. Nice bike. Keep us posted on your results. Both on the track and in the shop. I have an 01 fe650 that I've been sorting out and now becoming friends with. although it still wants to bite me it I'm too heavy handed. I'm interested in your main bearing freshen up as that is likely in my future.

Cheers

From one relative "newb" to another...Welcome and congrats on the bike!

the 550s are generally good. I would flick the seal back on the right behind the flywheel and see if you have roller mains. if you do I'd take (a small) chance and go to the end of the season. rollers on a 550: normally last forever!

regards

Taffy

A slightly belated mid season update! (only one more round to go!!)
Bikes been very quick and reliable, it had a mid season main bearing refresh courtesy of DCR and only had minor niggles so far...slipper clutch is now slipping correctly, turns out the stack height info provided was wrong, a thinner plate installed and now bob on. Currently looking for a top 10 finish in the NORA/BSMC National Championship, if I keep it rubber side up at the last round (Three Sisters, Wigan) then possibly 7th or 8th overall....
Need new footpegs after the last round, I ground the r/h peg half off!!!!

:D :D :D :D :D

that's brilliant!

when is that three sisters weekend? i've heard it is the one to go too.

regards

Taffy

Next (and final!) round is November 10/11 at Three Sisters. A great track for SMs with Lunar bend that goes on forever and a Tarmac tabletop!! There's racing both days and XP practice for anyone wanting to have a go without actually racing on the Saturday (£50).....

racing on rememberance Sunday? that ain't no ACU meeting then! never actually ever done anything on the 11th of the 11th :D :D

I'll try and have a look but I'm 180 miles. what number do you ride?

taffy

ACU seem to have very little input to the championship although we do need an ACU licence. I'm number #787, currently lying 12th overall but we get to drop our worst round so potential for a 5th to 8th place overall. Off the top of my head i'm 2nd place Berg rider

Season all done, finished 6th in the National Championship with a thrilling last meeting! Ups n downs (not literally, I managed to stay on for a whole weekend for only the 2nd time this year!!) and despite warping a plate or 2 in the last race my nearest rival had problems in race 2, a borrowed bike putting him back of the grid and so a steady mid pack finish (riding for the points!) left me with 6th overall for the season!

Next challenge, deciding whether the Berg is a keeper for next year or cross back to the orange side???!!! :? :?:

Cheers! Still undecided about what to ride next year but I'm going to use the Winter period to road legal it and see what happens in the new year!
