Welcome to the asylum.

Take a look on the left at "the Doc" most of your questions about anything can be read within.

Cheers.

Welcome David,
It seems each bike has its own personality when it comes to starting. It requires learning the particular "drill" that works for your bike. I can only tell you what works for me. That is assuming that the carb is set properly and the ignition system is in good condition.
Cold start
1) Pull the choke
2) Pull in the manual decompression lever
3) Crack the throttle
4) Kick the bike through 5 times, long smooth strokes
5) Close the throttle
6) Slowly bring the piston to TDC (slowly depress the kick start until you feel it bind or get hard, pull in the manual decompression lever and slowly push down on the kicker until you just pass the hard point)
7) Let the kicker return all the way to the top( you should hear a loud snap from the kickstart decompression device). Give it a long smooth kick all the way from the very top until it stops at the bottom. Make sure not to cheat at the top of the stroke, it must be a complete stroke. It will really help to stand on something like a cinder block. If it does not start repeat step 7 up to 5 times. If it still does not start repeat the entire process again. If you should start to smell fuel, release the choke and start from square 1 again.

For hot start use the same procedure except no choke and use full throttle during the intial 5 kick throughs with the manual decompressor. this will clear the cylinder of any partially burned or perculated fuel.

This is the "drill" that works for me, as long as everything else is set up properly. Usually the bike will start 2nd or 3rd kick.

What ever you do, don't give up....this drill took me about a year to figure out on my 01 and 02.

Good luck and may the force be with you,

Hi David, if the starting methods described above do not work, try this one. When cold, choke on, three or four kicks no throttle. Turn the choke off and give it a good strong kick. this method has worked very well on my 02 470. All bikes are a little different, but mine is VERY sensitive to the idle mixture and idle speed, once you get the bike running, check these settings. If these don't work, repost, and we'll get you through it!

Hi David,
I offer a performance upgrade package for the Dellorto PHM 40 equipped Husaberg. Said upgrade has been reported to assist with starting in addition to enhancing overall performance.

The cost is $150.00 plus parts, S/H/I and You must forward your carburetor.

I had Dale do my carb and I concur: starting became easier and I got many comments from fellow bergites that my bike was running very smooth. I'd say it was worth the $150 + S/H.

Starting an 01-03 Berg is a drill that you need to learn.

My trick to find TDC is to slowly push the kick start until there is slack in the decomp lever.

Then it is all about quality and not quantity. I for once NEVER use the choke, ever. I have a 2001 Fe501e, it is very similar to yours.

With the SEM ignition, you need to build a lot of RPM in order to get good spark. Therefore you need to kick from the top to bottom without hitting TDC, which could hurt your bike and yourself, and concentrate before you kick. Use a stone or bucket on the right side to stand on: you'll have more strength in your left leg.

It does not start like a Japanese 450 or a KTM 125 by giving several half-through kicks. With the proper technique, it starts even better than these bikes.

The main issue is that it is a left-side kicker and that most people are left-handed, therefore right-footed (if you ever played soccer or even rugby, you should know). With time you'd build enough muscle-memory to kick start it without thinking about it.
