My 2004 650 has a problem. For the most part it runs great, its well jetted and well looked after. However it has developed a problem. Basically it has started cutting out on me. Riding around it will be fine, fine, dead. Then it will normally restart within a couple of goes of the starter. Just before cutting it out starts popping and banging on the over-run like machine gun fire and then dies.

However there is no consistancy as to when it does it. It has happened within a minute of setting off but it has also happened after a trouble free hour of riding. I am at a bit of a loss as to what it can be as i cant make it happen or find any pattern to it. I'v been through the carb but it was fine and it feels electrical to me. Thought maybe a loose conection shorting out but cant find one.

Help!

I would check the fuel system first. Check the float bowl, petcock and tank for foreign bodies floating around. Most likely something big enough to cover the main jet but not get stuck in it.

Just a thought.

try starting the bike with no fuel tank on it and in the pitch dark! you'll probably see a HT spark arcing out on the bike somewhere.

obviously set it upo properly and make sure your fuel pipes are safe etc.

does seem carb related. sounds like starvation.

might need a new spark plug?

Hello yearone, welcome to the UHE.

From your description, I would bet on a fueling problem like a partially plugged carb vent hose. But I have also had ignition problems that are similar.

As I recall, a small number of the early 04s had poor workmanship in soldering the leads to the ignition stator.

You might check that out! Be careful with the gasket.

Let us know what you find.

Joe

oh that reminds me joe, my mate had the carb vent breathers melt to the 'zorst. check for this
