Hi!

I have had some metal bits in magnet several times as I checked, now I started to take the bike apart to see what's up, And I can't get the shaft out from the swingarm, the one which holds the engine in place. It seems to be stuck.

Any ideas, suggestions?

Cheers,Tom

Does the motor have to come out? Are you planning on doing a complete rebuild? Do you have a picture of the bits? There is a good chance the bolt is corroded and seized in the cases. Use a lot of penetrating oil, let it sit and pray.

I have to split the cases, because im guessing either the mains or one of the gearbox bearings have gone :(. I have found a lot of metal bits and pieces in a very short time interval on the magnet. I was thinking of maybe heating it up with a torch, heat expansion might cause the corroded pieces to split. But dont know if that does damage elsewhere???

Cheers, Tom

what bike you got ?

I had a 03 400 where the swing arm spindle seized. it was a nightmare to get out involving hot, cold, loads of oil and full on sledge hammer use.

luckily a new spindle and nut was quite cheap.

I manage to get the spindle to move a little then laid the bike on its side with the spindle pointed down and filled the other side with oil. left it 24 hrs put an appropriate sized rod down the hole and gave it some really good whacks and repeat
until its out. think it took 3 days of oil baths and hammering.

it was rather scary how hard I had to hit it and it I'd missed the rod would have deffo smashed the cases.

The bike im having the problem is a 2003 fx650.
Guess I should get ready for some hammer time :))

Cheers, Tom

Went and found my post from the time. Here's what I wrote;

had to deal with a seized pin recently but had managed to get both nuts off.

they tend to seized on the bearings in the swing arm rather than where it passes thru the rear of the motor.

the way i got it out was to heat up the swing arm as much as i dared then throw a bucket of water over it and use brute force to hammer the pin thru. (keep the nut on the side your hammering to start as it prevents the spindle from tuliping out, though it does wreck the nut) got it about half way out then with the bike layed over so the the side with the spindle sticking out is down i plugged the spindle and filled everything wil oil and left to soak for several hrs.

came back greased up the exposed spindle and knocked it back thru and out the other side.

it is rather frightening how hard you might actually have to hit it if it is really stuck.

the above worked for me and when i replaced everything i got the new spindle that only has a nut on 1 end.

Ty m8!
Only mine is definitely stuck in the motor not in the swingarm, cause I can move the swingarm easily and the spindle stays in place, on the other hand if I move the motor, it moves with it.

i have also had this problem , but after an hour of frustration i finally figured it out .
the swing arm bolt has 2 nuts 1 either side , obviously 1 of these needs to come off , well the other side needs to be tightened up yes tightened up as this puts a pulling force on the the shaft and puts a lot of strain on the corrosion then when you whack it from the other side ( the side with no nut ) there is a lot more force going through the shaft .
you might not see the shaft move but you can check this by re tightening the nut on the other side if you can tighten the nut then the shaft is moving , and by tightening the nut will make it move easier on the next whack .
remember though when tightening the nut it needs to be very tight , i used a large breaker bar .

cheers kris

Tommorrow I'll try that too, meanwhile I'm soaking it in pentrating oil, hope it helps.
I will let you guys know how it works out.

Cheers, Tom

It seems that soaking it in penetrating oil then hitting it with a 10 Kg hammer does the trick!
Finally got it out WOOOHOOOOO!

Cheers, Tom

Now don't forget the never-seize when you put it back
