Well, if you didnt see my other post, i must have done something wrong when i put my motor back together because i melted it down sunday. I rode it saturday for about an hour and was getting on it really hard on a track. it was working awesome and it felt really good to be back on a bike. sunday i was doing some carb tuning and was blasting down the road by my house, had it sixth gear WFO for a bit then was just cruising back and it started to seize up 8O well i pulled in the clutch and it kept running. i took the clutch apart and the trans was making some noises. just by turning the motor by hand i could feel some slack that I would rather not feel, I feared the worst and my fears just became reality as i split the cases. the bottom end of my rod is trashed.

im trying to figure out why this happened, only thing i can figure is no oil. isnt it pressurized? I pulled out one of the bolts on the cam cover when it was running and the crap just shot out, so the pump is working.

BTW the trans appears fine, no missing teeth or pitted gears, i think i must have a bent shift fork.

another thing, looking through the parts manuals in the 02 manual the 501 and 550 have a different rod part number, in 03 they are the same number. which one do i want to order?

Hi Dave,
Sorry to learn of your misfortune. :(

Depending upon the oil being used and the maximum rpm turned big end bearing failure does indeed happen.

The later connecting rod is .5mm longer eye to eye in an effort to reduce squish and increase static compression ratio. Given your camshaft I suggest installing the longer rod.

Hope this helps.
Best Regards,
Dale

more compression? Will i still be OK with 91 octane? I was running some cheap spectro oil as i was going to change it after i rode it a bit. how is the big end of the rod oiled? i would like to make sure everything is OK. this is the last time i pull this motor apart!

You will be safe using a pump gasoline of 91 octane (Pump Octane = R+M / 2) With the X2 camshaft you have installed.

The big end on post 2000 engines has a direct oil feed supplied via the left side crankshaft end.

I once again shall take this opportunity to suggest using Chevron DELO 400 engine oil.

Kindest Regards,
Dale

ive got the crank pressed apart and I tried to blow air through the hole on the end of the crank and hardly anything came though. I unscrewed the oil connectioin nipple or whatever its called and how the heck is that tiny hole supposed to lube this thing? im pretty sure that it must have gotten pluged. would it be a good idea to drill it out a bit for more oil flow? also, i noticed that it has a new part number for 03.

Hi Dave,
The jet flows enough oil. Enlarge it by much and you will overload the rings and consequently flood the cylinder with oil.

well taff i dont think it was the oils fault, but as much as i go through the stuff, It will be cost effective for me to start using Delo 400 anyway.

BTW, MotoXotica came to my rescue again and had the 03 rod kit in stock!

Make sure you dont overdue it with the gasket compound when sealing up rocker cover etc, as any excess goo can be seqeezed off in side and and easily block up oil galleries. First oil change after having rocker cover off you will find lots of chunks of this rubbery compound on oil filter & screen.

Cheers
