Alright guys, I've just bought a 2003 FC 550, anything I should look out for on that particular model? The previous owner said he has replaced the cam chain and tensioner with the better upgrade as recommended by taffmeisters. Anything else I should watch for?
Also I've been out of motocross riding for about a year, only had a YZ250F then. So hopefully I wont kill myself on this 8O
Thanks,
Adam.

It won't have the same kind of stump pulling power as the C90 but will kick back a lot harder if you don't get your starting technique sorted.................. enjoy.

It is a ******* to cold start, read a few topics on here about it, but they all suggest using the manual decompression lever. Problem is my bike doesn't have a manual lever.

Many don't have a de-comp lever (my 501 doesn't) & use an internal de-comp lobe that kicks in when you kick over the bike.

There are many threads on this topic especially by me as I'm a bit mechanically thick so tend to talk common sence non technical stuff.

Thing is, you may find a good starting technique for you but ultimately the berg should start as easy as any other big bore 4s if its set up right.

Its worth persevering as it's a joy when you can stand next to it & kick start it as Ladyberg notes in another similar thread running yesterday.

View topic above & hi & wellcome to the club.

I take it from having a quick google search that Bergs are noisy motors. As mine is quite noisy and tappy, I'm gonna get the valves clearances checked anyway. But please someone reassure me and tell me they are naturally noisy :) ?

check crank endfloat you need between .4mm to .5mm i have another engine here with a smashed main inner race and ruined balancer, removed .35mm of shims and still only got .45mm so the crank flex under revs may consume any clearance under .10 to .15 you have and load up the bearings. In 2002 a bulletin was sent from the KTM factory and told us to open up the recommended enfloat from .3mm and increase to .5mm
do you agree Taffy if not what are your measurements you use.

Personally I think they all sound like a broken dishwasher :D Yes as a general rule they are noisier than most bikes. Especially if you have a metal skid plate installed. The noise tends to echo or intensify. If you not familiar with Berg's it's hard to say what's normal and what isn't.
At the end of the day you have to rely on changing the oil and inspecting the filters often for debris. That will be the determining factor.

My 2 cents.

I have an '03 as well. It too makes a mechanical symphony!

Don't worry about it, if its busted, it won't run!

Heres a video of my bike: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rv5eDjBDX-M
Please have a look, and hopefully tell me to stop being a worried tw@ :D
The sound sounds like it coming from the bottom end of the engine.
I bought it like this and the guy said thats how they sound, but just wanna check as Im selling it soon and dont want to rip anyone off.

ok: stop being a worried tw@!
