hello everyone I'm a new member I've lurked for about a week but i got a 1999 501 berg 2 days ago and ran in to some problems and i've look at the forums here you guys seem like the people to ask. well here it goes my berg won"t start anymore the starter spins free but never turns to motor over it sounded funny yesterday like the starter turn the motor over but only in pulses like it would catch then slip but it would start now all i get is the whine of the starter motor :(

welcome to UHE 'tiller'!!!!!!!!!!

as you'll have gathered the doc is for 2000+ machines and the later engines although some things are the same.

i believe that your starter sprague is slipping and needs replacing. on the earlier huseys i believe that that is a strip down job. someone will be along to confirm this. can you kickstart it ok?

where you from? please put the bike and where you're from in your title or signature.

good luck with this and do keep us informed, we'll try and help.

regards

Taffy

I got a '99 501, but mine is only kickstart. But as usual..Taffy is probably calling it right.the sprag sounds as if it has gone, the way of all good things!

Back from the dead

Ok guys im back you were right it was the sprauge gear i replaced that with alot of other parts the previous owner neglected doing the up keep. Well anyway she's back togerther and running strong i'll try and post some pics thanks for everything guys, the info i got from reading other posts have helped me do the repairs.

tillertwin,
your bike looks in good condition for the age. mine looks a lot older! only thing...I am not a fan of the fork gaiters. Any, undetected dirt and, moisture that gets in can really do damage with rust etc. I use fork protectors and wash off the forks after each use. I like the silver frame. mine is painted blue and my MX boots rub it off continually.

Yeah,
that is a big step up in looks. I like the look of the matt black swing arm. I would have said it would not work, but seeing it shows that it looks good. my polished one is beginning to show a bit of tarnish. And I can get lots of matt black paint free from my work!
