Hi

My 2000 FE 400 suddenly lost power. No scary mechanical noises, and no loss of compression. When i got it home i found that there's no spark. My original sem stator seems to be just fine, measures 164, and 2960. My new stator is also within specs, - the name of this product will be kept a secret :-((but, starts with an E). As i am no mechanical wizzard i ordered it before i checked the old one. Got new sparkplugs, standard NGK's. Plug cap measured 4,3, i don't know if thats good enough or if it's wrong enough to keep me at home in the beautiful spring weather??? Not easy to get new parts where i live, could not get a new one today. The bike will start occationally, but with no real throttle pickup, can keep it running for a few minutes but it feels all wrong so i don't. Whats next, - do i have to order a new and extremely expensive coil/cdi or are there some other tricks to be done first??? What's the cost of this part where you live? Any tips are extremely welcome!

Hi Uar,

Does the engine respond the same if you use either stator, check all connections and earths and plug cap4.3K is OK.
I would say it is unlikely to be the cdi, when do you notice the spark has returned?
Have you been through the fuel side.
Can you give a bit more input.

Regards

Sparks.

Same response with both stators. It seems to be no pattern to when it starts. I have not been able to see any spark with any of my two new plugs, it just decides to start from time to time?? Not been through the fuel side yet, will see if the plug gets wet later tonight. Will also check all connections, the bike has been kept outside all spring. When it lost power i was at nearly full throttle in sixth gear, could keep it just running for about 3 kilometers. It died when i clutched it out, started again when i released. The bike has been totally reliable untill this point. I'll get outside and look into your suggestions, really need to get it working again.

Thanks for the input Sparks

RE: Re: Heeeelp!! No spark FE400

At the momet i get blue sparks with every kick :)) I understand that blue is a good sign? Drained the carb, but won't be able to reassemble untill tomorrow. Looks promising though, just maybe i can save 4000,- norwegian kroner which equals about $800,-. Hope is up!!

RE: Re: Heeeelp!! No spark FE400

Still blue sparks, but seems kida small?? Cleaned carb and all jets. Checked and sprayed all contacts, but still no go. At the moment i'm using the stator that shall remain unnamed, have tried the original with same results. Need more tips, - anyone????????

Hi uar69
The CDI's aren't known for trouble and rarely fail and since you get spark then I'd say it's OK.
The SEM stators are an absolute piece of s**t and I have a very recent story about them that I'll talk about another time but since your stators are both metering to spec and both give same results then I think they're unlikely also.
I had a strange electrical gremlin where every time the bike got wet I would lose spark. Finally I pulled apart every connector on the bike, cleaned and re-assembled using some dielectric grease, silicon and tape to waterproof it all.
During all this I found some corrosion on the main ground cluster and between the rectifier/regulator etc under the tank. The main ground cable between the battery and the frame was also not perfect.
I fixed these and also ran another ground cable from battery to the ground cluster.
Problem went away. Because I did all this stuff at once and not 1 by 1 I don't really know if the problem was a dirty/loose connection somewhere or a problem with the main ground but it makes more sense that it would be the ground.
Before spending any money just check all that sort of stuff.

Ok, need to check all connections an grounds again. Have disconnected the killswitch without any hallelujah's. Starting to loose my temper, thinking about trading bike for beer ;-)
Thanks!!

you need to get back to basics and do a basic check of all adjustments. valves, timing, carb (pull it and take it apart, ck for worn needle/ needle jet, clean out pilot jet). don't obsess on the spark. what color was the ceramic insulator in your plug?

Valves are ok. Timing is impossible to tell with unoriginal stator, need to try original again. Have pulled carb, jets ok don't konow about needle. Insulation on old plug was all black, seems to have been running way too rich??
