Heat Transfer - Got my new KTM made Husaberg cooling fan

Picked up the new Force part Auxilary Cooling fan. $149.95 from MotoXotica. Came in a KTM parts box tagged FanCPL Husaberg.

Husaberg instructions. Appears to be super Easy install on the 06 radiator with the pre placed bolt holes. Fan is dynamically balanced, that is nice, it has a small weight on one blade. Thermostat to be installed at radiator bottom drain plug and wiring harness plug into bike electrics. Very Nice High quality parts. Fan is plastic wheel with sturdy metal housing - heavy little sucker. color all black. will install eventually, probably wait till late spring.

I have over heated the Husqvarna on tight tight up hill goat trails last summer. I saw that husaberg offered the cooling fan in the force catalog and thought, why not they offer it for a reason. I'm gonna get 1. Now I stay cool even in da heat. :firestarter:

Do they have a temp switch embedded in the fan bracket or is it attached somewhere on the tank?

Yes they call it a "thermoswitch", It's temperature sensor plug with tabs for two wires to connect to given with the harness......That device is placed into the bottom of the right side radiator replacing a plug that exists there now....... I would say thermoswitch is a good terminology for the device. It reads on the parts list as Thermoswitch 80-85 degrees. I assume when it senses water temp there at the base of the radiator, if water temp is in that 80-85 temp range then it allows current to flow thru the "switch" to start the fan.. or some such arrangement.

80-85F seems low doesn't it to trigger a fan? maybe they mean 80-85 C that be hot, must be Celcius

Yes, that's a bit low or too high but I think it is 80C open and 85C close, 208F open, 219F close.

Bigbob,

What would the install be like on 05 with 06 tank? I am presuming no located mounting holes on 05. Drill your own holes or fashion a bracket of sorts?

lefrog interesting stuff, willl see how the fan operates this summer under tight riding conditions first.

cota.....well assuming the 05 has the spare wiring harness plug in and the radiator has the bottom plug......I assume all ya have to do is carefully drill some mounting holes thru the fins of your radiator at the exact right locations with out hitting the vertical wet cores........I am not sure that can be done, not something I Mr. pencil would choose to try.

I don't see any home made bracket as the mounting answer for the fan...really the reasonable thing if you feel you need the fan is buy a new 06 radiator with the correct mounting holes in it.

Note that 80C=176F and 85C=185F.

The optional OEM fan I installed in my '04 KTM 525 EXC uses the same thermoswitch (80-85). I measured the temperature of the coolant in the radiator reservoir with a lab thermometer. With the engine fast idling in the garage, it took 7 minutes for the fan to switch on at 196F (91C). After a short while, with the engine still idling, the fan switched off at 188F (87C). This temperature range works well out on the trail as the fan turns on only under the most grueling conditions, e.g. slow 1st and second gear situations or intense hillclimbs.

thermoswitch looks same but fan housing is not like that, KTM part is round and more sturdy design

Oh yeah I messed up by celsius to farenheit conversion, multiplied by 2.2 as if it was kilograms and not 1.8... then added 32.

So 176/185 seems correct. It should keep you away from boiling temperature.

We have some pretty ingenious guys here on this board. I am sure that one of them could fabricate some type of bracket for that fan to fit. and i ma sure that people on here would pay for one to be made as well... instead of paying for new 06 tang and shrouds and the expensive fan...

Delrin would be the material. You can machine it very easily with simple tools and you can buy pieces on eBay.
