hi just wondering if the head gasket can be changed with the engine still in frame.the bike is a 2003 650.i used to have a ccm which required the engine to be out to do the job.thanks

Doo-able plus possible and also cheapable, ask for a spray called Hylomar and use the same gasket, why do you want to take the head off. did it explode. then its sive, expensive, uncomprehensive, and you will get explosive, talk to us brother tell us your problem and we will turn it around and make it SIVEABLE. if there is a such word.

im getting a small amount of whiteish smoke coming from exhaust on high revs and think it my be head gasket.i was thinking of taking the head off while still in frame to see if i could see anything.but with the couple of replies ive had i think it may be easier to take the engine out.then comes the dilema of just doing the head gasket [which i have done before on my 550]or sending the engine off to dcr for full check and rebuild.at the moment the bike starts and runs with no problems.there doesnt seem to have any coolant loss but think i will drop the oil to see if its milky with water.

No don't. just leave it in the bike. it's easy enough to do. if you haven't ridden it for a while you can get a vapour. if you have milky oil that proves nothing either. it looks milky all the time!

best way is to fill the radiator over the entrance hole and start the bike looking for bubbles. if you don't see bubbles you haven't got a head gasket gone.

if you see bubbles then worry.

i'd make sure it was leaking antifreeze by smelling the exhaust just after getting the white smoke. should give off a sweetish odor if it's antifreeze. most likely it's oil.

take the water pump impeller out then look for bubbles, a small leak doesn't show up amongst the normal agitation and foaming, big leak yes but not a small one

or bleed the system with the bleed plug on top of the head then take it for a quick ride cool bleed again then ride a bit longer there should not be any more gas stuck in the head after that, if the Head gaskets leaking some of the bubbles collect in the bleed port area
