Hello All Joined up about a week ago, after i bought my new toy.

The bike is a 2002 Fe650 IN SM spec.

The bike has been a PITA to start when cold and hot.

How ever today whilst out for a ride she died.

I was riding along up a hill motor was under load 3/4 way throught revs in 6th when the motor stopped, it didnt lock up the rear wheel and just came to a stop, at first i thought i was out of fuel but checkedf this and it was ok, tried to kick her over (no lecy start) the KS went down about 3" and stopped dead!

I thought it may have seized, but when i manually pull the decompressor i can kick it over and it seems the piston is going up and down, how ever with out the decomp it only seems to move a little and then goes solid.

There was oil and water in the motorand i dont think it was over heating.

It feels to me as if something is may be jamming it in the head yet when the decomp is manually engaged its .

Does this sound like a coomon issue?

I have had a search but cant find anything that really adds up.

The block cases etc dont seem to have cracks or external damage rad also seem s fine and is holding water.

Im leaning towards either a dropped valve or some part of the decomp system has broken in the head.

Have you guys got any idea's

I appreciate all your help guys.

Thank you

Daz

It doesnt sound familiar to me. You may want to pull the rocker cover and have a look. The 02 models had issues with rockers, cam gears and counterbalancers. You may have a rocker issue or perhaps broken a valve spring.

hydrolock? pull the sparkplug and kick it and see if anything comes out. (move the plug wire away from the plug hole and hold the kill switch)

Ive been doing some reading and it sounds like the decompreesor may be the isue, how ever cant understand why it would stop whilst running.

Hydrolocked? doubt full, havent been through any water, and surely with the manual decomp it would still be solid which it is not and the rad seemed pretty full, and i have no isgns that the HG has gone so cant think of any way it could hydrolock.

My bet is a broken valve spring, and a bent valve.

Look at my Gallery

ah, i'll bet you have the kickstart decomp cable still connected and its either come loose or broken, forcing you to work against compression when you kick. my new bet is a fouled plug.
oh, and who did blast vince?

And top prize goes to Scrapveiw.

1 broken Camchain.

All how ever looks ok, All valves sem staright, motor holds compression, no internal damage other than a few small scrapes on the inner casing, I have cleaned all the shards and gizer wshed the motor through, a new camchain will be orderd in the morning along with a primary cover gasket.

Are these a NON interference motor?

I will let you all know what happens when the new chain is here.

The manula says a replacement every 200 hours, whioch seem ok, are there any other cam chain failures on the forum?

Also Rev limit!
Is there 1?
if i hit it is it with in safe working limit of the motor?
I figure its well outta the power band though as i notice the power drop off very easily and hsavent had a hint of limiter.

hi daz , remove the valves and roll them on a piece of glass , or if you have access to a valve cutting machine , check and make sure they are not slightly bent, they can still hold pressure if very slightly bent so dont let that fool you into thinking they are ok, if they are very slightly bent the bike will run fine for a few hours ,but then a valve head will snap off and cause a lot of damage , you should be able to see if the valves have cliipped the piston , either slight marks on the piston or carbon missing on one edge of the valves.and they generally hit the piston with cam chain failure due to high compression and a relatively high lift on the cam ,unless you are very lucky..ian

Head the head off today and thank the lord, no contact between valve/piston, I have ordered all the parts from DCR so should have it back up and running for Saturday.

Daz

Daz, you are so lucky...the piston could have given those valves a real whack at that engine speed! Also heard stories of camchains coming out of the casing! you got off lightly!!

Well all the parts turned up at lunch today, got the motor assembled and re-set all the tappets thia afternoon, new filter, plug and fresh oil. (obvoulsy)

I will get the exhaust, rad, tank etc fitted tomorrow morning and fingers crossed she will fire up. Then a week end of playing.

Daz

Woohoo, finished her this moriong, started 5th kick, road test went fine, really happy, Ive got to re-adjust the exhaust tappets there a tad noisy, I adjusted them to the 0.10 as per the manual, but think 0.075 will be a bit better.

Also After about 20 mins riding, i stopped the bike, had a cuppa chilled for about 1/2hr and then went to start the bike, and it tokk ages to start quite litterally 10mins iof kicking. Know i had adjusted the decomp cables as per the manual, new plug, tick over and choke operations seem fine. it started fine 3/4 times this morning, but this afternoon was a complete arse.

Im doing as per the recomendations on this site, Motor up to TDC and then slowly take it just passed tdc ansd kick, (not using the handle bar mounted decomp) MY OLD atk WAS EASIER TO START and thats sayng something.

When i stop the bike i turn both fuel taps to the off position, and then tunr on when ready to start.

Can i have some suggestions please?

Daz

Thats easy enough i will try that, how ever the plug is showing signs of weak not rich,

I will get the wideband on it and check, Thanks for the tip.
