Hello,
I have a 96' FE 501 that I purchased at an auction. After giving it a good inspection I found it needed a new stator. The stator was replaced with a new unit and the 40 mm PHM was re-built. The bike now starts with about 2-3 kicks cold and runs like a rocket after I played with jetting but, it will NOT START HOT !!! What am I doing wrong ?? I am lost ! :?

Probably the carburetor is maladjusted.

Turn the air mixture screw 1 1/2 turn from the completly closed position. Start the engine and let it warm. Now you must deal also with the idling screw i.e. when the engine is hot if it is much acelerated turn the the idling screw out or vice versa.

For me works perfectly.
Regards

Hi,

maybe it´s something with your choke at your carburettor.
Or something else with you carb, I would say.
Test it like Husby said. For example if you turn the idle srew completly in
and the engine is still running you´ll need a smaller pilot jet.
But for more tips I need some details.

best regards

One trick I use is to pull the decompression lever in, open the throttle and kick the motor through 5 times. This seems to clear it out. I then bring it up to tdc and give it a good kick. If it does not start after 3 kicks I repeat the procedure.
Have you checked the float level?

HARD STARTING WHEN HOT !!

OK, Thanks everyone for your input.I have adjusted the valve lash according to the manual, the float level is correct and my timing is set as per manual. When the bike is warm and idling I can turn the mixture screw in completely and it will still run with about a 500-600 rpm increase. Should I try a smaller pilot jet ? It has a #50 right now. I tried the trick of kicking it thru 5-6 times w/compression release and about 1/4 throttle. Then I do the normal routine and add throttle at the bottom of the stroke which seems to start it now does this sound normal ? :)

From the workshop manual the standard jetting is :-

Main 195
Needle Jet DR270
Needle K51 (3rd clip from top)
Pilot jet 40 - 45
Start jet 45
Mixture 11/2 - 13/4 turns

I run a 35 pilot in my Dellorto but my bikes is an 03.
The needle and needle jet could also be worn.

Normally you shouldn't touch the throttle while starting.

You need to lower your pilot jet. 50 is too big. The pilot primarily affects idle and just off idle. You might try 40 next.

Hi,

do you have a round slide or a flat slide carb?
Your settings are a bit strange.

Hi again,

twistthethrottle´s settings are the normal settings.
The #33 pilot jet is standard for the last few years.
I´m not sure, but I saw that the bikes for the USA had
some other settings as stock.
But obviously you´ll have to change your pilot jet to a smaller one, that´s a fact. You must test it.

HARD STARTING WHEN HOT !

All right guy's,Thank's again for the info.I just ordered all the starter jets from # 45 on down. The needle & seat are new and the carb is a PHM 40mm round heavy slide. I did add a new header pipe & silencer which is a SPIES model. My main jet was a # 195 but I tried different sizes and found that # 205 works best so far ? P.S. I am amazed at the tractor like horsepower ! Much different from my other 4 strokes (Jap Stuff) 8)

Hard start when hot

Hi, SHARFSCHUTZEN....
I ride a '98 fc501, oem Dellorto PHM40ZS; start jet is 45, pilot is 34, main 172, K51 needle, 3rd clip up, needle jet 270DR, mixture screw @ 1-1/2 turns out, idle screw @ 5 to 5-1/2 turns out, idles at 1550 - 1600 rpm. Riding at sea level (coastal Maine). Cold start (all temps) 3-5 kicks, hot start 1 kick, even after trying to ride bike inverted  !!!
I clean carb fairly often, depending on riding conditions; the Dellorto PHM40 seems to be fairly sensitive to dirt and grit, usually going in to a sputtering, popping (lean-burn) mode at part-throttle, and usually won't idle.

My 96 501 had hard starting woes as you did. I do believe I ended up with a 45 pilot, but be certain the needle and needle jet are not worn from vibration as well. Even after cleaning up the jetting it still refused to start hot. Turns out my water pump impeller had melted and the bike was running too hot and overheating the carb. I also replaced my stator and set the valves trying to fix the problem, but a piddly impeller you wouldn't even think about was the culprit. Guess quite a few 96 models had the bad impellers.

HARD STARTING WHEN HOT

Right On ! More great info I can use. I,m playing hit & miss right now with the pilot jetting ! So far a #38 is installed and it came with a #40. More jets are on the way.

Thanks everyone,
