Just to update those with an interest,
Replaced my rocker arms on my 2002 650 SM. They were fine, no play at all. The new rocker arm assembly were though. The new exhaust rocker had so much play on the shaft I sent the thing back and the new one was fine. Watch out for this, check the radial play on the shaft before re-fitting. A new rocker should be quite tight but rotate freely.
Along with these I replaced a stretched cam chain (silver one) which was gone after only 60 hours ! I replaced it with the black Regina cam chain, this one is quite a bit wider and looks more substantial. The drive sprocket and cam sprocket were fine and unworn.
I changed the cam (53) for a GW G3 camshaft, jeez this cam really lets the motor rev out, it keeps on reving ! 8O
It has lost some bottom end though but being a 650 has loads a runt anyway and then going absolutely crazy up top. I think its given the top end a few more ponies and the bike now pulls a much higher top end speed.
I want to get a higher compression piston when the finances allow.
Beware though, the higher lift and duration cams make for easier kicking over but harder starting. Mine is quite a pain to get going now even after tuning the carb. It seems u have to get the dynamics just right for it to fire.
Great little rev'er now though and I think it would be great for long tracks or road racing.
Lloyd.
