Hey guys i had been looking for a more powerful bike than my old 86 XLR250R and was looking at wr450r and the ktm exc's but often both of there were thrashed out and or not in the licensing systems and i wanted a bike for dual duties.
Anyway while searching i came across a low km 08 fe450, been sold at a dealers, bounced emails back and forth a bit then they gave me the old owners number and i c gave him a call as the dealers seemed fairly clueless on the bike. Well the old owner is a motorcycle tech and the fe450 had been his personal bike till his injuries meant he had to down size and once i found of the service histroy and modifcations i contracted the dealer and made a deal.
So last weekend at 7am Saturday the bike trans van came up my driveway and delivered a 08 fe450 with 2,700km on the clock and a fresh service new tyres and new WOF (our version of a MOT)

It has a WER stablizer, B&B sump guard, rekluse Z start pro, aftermarket blinkers, and a fresh too end.
But has been sitting for 4 years. I rode it last Saturday and found it had a bad head shake at 140kph, and that it had a oil leak, but ran well and i was very happer with the performance.
Si yesterday i pulled the tank off to investigate the oil leak, and found the the breather hose from the tappet cover to the air box (you know the Y shaped one) is perished and causing the oil leak. I also noticed that the rubber intake manifold is on its way out. The dealer i bought the bike off should be willing to supply the parts but as they are 8hours away would rather do the work myself or get a local shop to do the work. Can anyone point me in the right direction of where to find the parts numbers. Also does anyone have any experience in changing the factory steering lock barrel? Is there an easy way ti add a key ignition without cutting wires is there a plug in one haven't looked at the loom yet.

congratulations on the new bike! I guess there won't be too many warranty claims made over that distance....easy money for the dealer. don't let them off! photos are good evidence.

i can do the lot if you need it.

the ignition barrel is still available and most make a nice bracket for it. the wires will be behind the headlight and we can help sort that out. you need a wiring diagram plus some some simple plans of the back of the pins.

the headshake is unusual so look for the usual stuff: wheel alignment, bearings gone etc. the parts fische is good for sorting out which way round and how stuff fits.

Taffy

Thanks heaps for the replies Taffy And Plumbbob.
The dealers are supplying replacement breather and intake boot, as well as a new steering lock barrel, they are confident they can source the correct parts with out me having to find the parts numbers myself, i was concerned as they are Suzuki and Triumph dealers. There is a cheap generic 3 pin ignition set on our local version of Ebay "trademe" i was thinking of fitting and at the same time fitting a gps tracker remote immobilizer.
I have ridden dirt bike for many years both off road and on along with a few road bikes and the head shake was very scary i have never experienced a tank slapper bofore then. As it has a fresh WOF (mot) i wouldn't expect any bearing issues as they should have check that, I was going to start with ballancing and take it from there.
Thanks again Hádge

One other thing i was thinking of adding a auxiliary oil tankso that on long multiple day adverture trips i don't have to change the oil every day or two, i have search the forum yet but also haven't seen a post about such a mod yet, has anyone got any info or helpful links for a mod like this it would be greatly appreciated
Cheers Hádge

i have never seen an extra oil tank. just change the oil. you just need a strap to hold the left bar so it leans away from a wall and while it drains you get the next litre ready. it is about 5 minutes work but I know that that is beer time lost and fully accept it is very valuable indeed!

you might miss an all black try - rare as they are....

nothing to do with 'balance'. headrace bearings, tyre pressures, wheel alignment (use string). they are the basics.

I do love my new to me bike, its a blast, and i am sure once i have done a few lil mods and got myself dialed into it she will do me well. And hopefully for a long time. I have seen one thread (don't think it was here) a guy adverture riding on a 12 fe570 who made his part of his frame into a oil tank and is doing a rtw on it. My main concern with messing with oild system is the potential to lower pressure or strain the oil pump. But with and extra 1.5l of oil i would almost triple the oil change intervils, and rugby isn't really my thing… with a family and "her indoors" getting bike time should be in the saddle as much as possible and not wrenching. Thank again for the input
Cheers Hádge

Oh one other question that i am sure you can help with Taffy, how powerful is the standard stator, i was thinking of adding a charge port or two, for gps and cell phone when i add a key ignition, and the security tracker /immobilizer.(Do the electrics in one go ya know) i have fabrucatiin experience and was thinking of making a nice brushed stainless steel mount for these. can the stock stator handle this? My local shop says that the stock stator will do fine, but they are not Husaberg people so am deferring to you on this. At some point in the future i hope to swap the incandescent bulbs out for plug in L.E.D's this should help take some strain off the stator, or at least increase the life of my bikes battery.
Thanks again Hádge

exactly, you need to take the strain off the stator somewhere. the wires can get a bit warm sometimes as well! there are better experts on electrics than me on them though.

Extra oil capacity pre 70 degree Bergs

I wanted the same thing! I want to add extra spin on filter under the seat, to hold as much as possible oil. You need oil pump special cover. I have seen such a thing in the pictures. Recently I have found this OFFROADBOSS.COM they seem to be offering such a cover for oil cooler that they offer. Another excellent way to increase almost a liter is to remove oil seal by the stator side crankshaft main hearing and turning dry stator into a wet stator. Works great. KTM rfs engine has that and possibly exactly the same stator! If I remember correctly bushmechanic has it done by himself on his Gerg. Let me / us know what you find. 800 cc oil amount and frequent oli changes just suck!!! Under the seat I can fit about one liter size oli filter add to this Bushmechanic idea and you have almost three liters!!!

Since you have the 70° i can help you straight away as i have this to share… So You Want a Lightweight Adventure Travel Bike?. | Expedition Portal it was shared to me by another kiwi berg rider with a 570. Unfortunately thus exact mod won't work on the 08 but with an aftermarket tank and or wet stator i may be getting to the desired oil capacity and the ability to use the bike as regular transport with out weekly oil changes…
Thanks for the reply and hopefully this helps you.

I will read slowly to contain info that there is and lots of it!! I will start with external spin on filter. I actually have The 550 that is '07 and in process of importing '08 Fe 550 but it's not 70 degree.

Oops i miss read oh…
But the the plumbing discription is very helpful with the one way value and alike. I have noticed that my stock oil filter cover has a female thread in it so this may be a fractory hit to the fact that it is more than possible to do a oil tank or cooler if needed.
On the Honda XR and XL with the RFVC engine there is a port in the oil filter housing very similar to the Husaberg on, it is used on the BAJA version to add a factory oil cooler, many people use this port to fit aftermarket coolers to the non Baja model bikes. So perhaps the thread in the oil filter cover is the Husaberg version of this honda one…

Once i work out how to post pictures here i can post pictures of my XLR250R and its plugged cooler port that isn't used on mine but i was considering using but didn't really need, and the female thread on my Husabergs oil filter cover. Your may have the same port.
