Last weekend I delivered a 2007 FE550 to a CDN Magazine that was not doing a shootout, but a real world comparo between a KLX450, WR450, CRF450X, 525EXC and a FE550. I was going to take a 450, but it was sold a few days earlier.

After 400kms of trail riding, the magazine guys were blown away with the 550. 3 of the 5 testers said it was their favourite bike and the other 2 thought it was the 2nd best behind the KLX. They loved smooth power and thought the chassis was superior to the other bikes.

They arent going to have real winner of the test, but the writer told me that it will be noted that the Berg was the favourite bike of the majority of testers.

Nice work Scott. It's is interesting that despite being a big bore, the 550 drew praise, at testament to really how well the bikes work. Its generally felt that big bikes don't belong in tight woods, so evidently, barriers are being broken!!

Was this Cycle Canada, Inside Motorcycles or something else?

Inside Motorcycles

I rode a 550 instead of my 450 and was very surprised how easy the big bore was to ride in the tight stuff. Most of the day I was riding at 1/4 throttle or less. It is a big ***** cat, until you open the throttle past half and then it is a lion!

Thanks for the great post.

I can't agree more about how tame the 550 in direct relationship to your right wrist. It's great to have the flexability of low end smoothness and the trigger is there if you need to pull it!! Just be sure you 've got it pointed in the right direction!!

I went for a weekend ride with about14 other people a couple of weeks ago. Having the only Husaberg in the group ( as usual ) it drew alot of attention from the other riders ( CRF450, WR450, Gasgas 450 etc ) & we swapped bikes during the course of the activities.

All 3 guys that had a blast on the berg couldnt believe the traction & agility of the 550 over their 450's. All enjoyed the armstretching power whilst maintaining it was surprisingly easier than theirs to throw around. The only negative comment was how tiring it was to keep smooth when fatigue set in & the mighty 550 powerplant trying to throw them off the back.

Looks like I now have 2 potential buyers for my bike when I trade up to the '07 model 550.

Very encouraging comments for someone looking at this bike.... thanks for these posts!

Our Fe550e has very little engine braking, that's why it' so easy in the woods, you get the arm pulling power when you want it, but not the torso lunging forward on engine de-acceleration. When you are on and off the gas shifting and all that in thw woods, believe me the Husky TE510 (my 2005) has that 4 stroke lunging to it......but my FE550e floats more and is a fine woods bike very nice.

Our tranny is a little wide for my taste, I did like My TE510 close ratio tranny better in the woods, BUT Hands down no questions or qualifiers I like the FE550e better in the woods and am faster on it then I was on my husky 510. (Now the Husky 450 is a different animal and very nice in the woods.)

and the KTM 525 exc is even worse a woods machine then the TE510.......... Yup The FE550e is fun in the woods.

Interesting info on the engine braking, hadn't contemplated that between the bikes. Good to know bigbob....
