When I first got my 650 it had a 178 main jet and ran lovely, now 4 years later I'm finding a 162 MJ to rich for it.
Still using the same exhaust, Air filter (well same type of air filter)
Can anybody tell what might cause this?

Ok put new needle and needle jet in, now when I start her she pops and bangs and won't idle, try rev her up and just more pops and bangs,
Settings are:
MJ 162
PJ 40
MAJ 1.1/4 out
PAJ 1/2 out.

PS its not an MX FCR just FCR 41 if that makes any diferance.

I'm nat an expert.. but have a few obvious comments to this,

Did you get the SAME needle code ???
Why did you not go back yo your MJ 178 again ???
Sure no dirt entered the carb ??

Kind regards,
Anders, DK

Did you loose the little o-ring seal on the mixture adjusting screw?? Easy to do, done it before. Runs super lean, will even blue the header pipes in a few minutes.

Needle code: yes got the same.
MJ: 178 way to rich when WOT (just bogs down) a 162 seemed still to rich at WOT before I replaced the needle and needle jet
Carb has be cleaned.
Not losed any O-rings.

what happens when I start it is this, Kicks over and starts no choke, no throttle and will idle slowly (would die if throttle not cracked open a bit) try reving it 1/4 throttle and pops a bangs reving up and on the over run,( is this cos it rich or lean?)

the bang is as you shut the throttle, you have made sure there are no air leaks at the exhaust joints and where the carb joins the air boot and manifold.

apologies if this has already been covered.

all joints are A OK.

it was running nicely until I tried to improve the carburation for a road bike instead of a race bike.
just wanted it to run a bit better on a even throttle.

Greetings,

What year is your bike?

I'm assuming that it has a FCR carb since you mention a paj-yes?

Let's get some specifics eh? What needle are you running?

When it was running fine what needle and setting did you have?

What did you change when it started to go wrong?

Since it was running great before you started messing about, it has to be something that you changed.

The 1.25 turns out on the paj is way too much air, that's like a 125 paj, way too much air for the 40 pilot you are running, should be more like 5/8 of a turn out.

The newer 650 work good with a 160 mj, and an EKR set on position #2, or a DVR set on pos #6.

If the FCR came stock on your bike, there is a small diaphragm on the side of the carb that works to prevent this decel popping, if equipped have you checked it? Could be a hole there that is giving you fits.

Next, there is a seal or O ring that seals the vacuum release plate on the slide that can go bad. Replace that O ring. It is very delicate and if you got carb cleaner or contact cleaner on it, chances are it's toast.

Let me know what you think.

ah yes basic details doh!

its a 2003 FS650 had a little porting done to it before I got it.
FCR pumper carb not the MX type tho.

the needle is a OCEM-R I have replaced this with a new one and replaced the nozzle.

original settings
needle ocem-r
Clip 2
MJ 168
PJ 48
PAS 1.25 OUT
PS.5 OUT

it ok with this set up as a race bike ie it would start well idle and throttle reponse was good for snapping it open out of the turns.

now the bike is used mainly on the road and although I'd liked to go balls out all the time local plod won't, so I wanted it to be smoother mid throttlle if you get my meaning and in that prosses Iv uked it right up.

with 48 pilot jet you could turn the PS in all the way and still tick over just, so I thought that was to big a PJ.

I sure it just settings that need changing.

If I had a trailer Id take to a dyno shop and get it done.

My bad, after reviewing your post I see that you posted that you have an FCR 41, so that makes it a MK I. Does yours have a choke?

"Normally" the range on the PS is 1 & 1/18 to 2 & 1/2 turns out. Again, your 1.25 turns out on the PAS is, IMHO way too much air in the first place, but according to the "DOC" right for your PJ size.

With the PS all the way in the bike should die. Keep in mind that about 70% of the tick over mix is from the needle straight.

I checked the DOC and it lists the EM series needle with a S straight which is the next step leaner from your R, using the 48 PJ.

A lot of folks are running a much smaller pilot jet than you are, with the corresponding PAJ size.

For example, just looking at the DOC and what you are after, perhaps this setting might be better for.

DMS needle at clip position #2.
35 PJ with a 45 PAJ.
Reduce Pump squirt to .028" or .75 seconds.
PS 1.5 turns out = or - .5 turns.

It does list a 150 MJ in the DOC with the above settings but you could start with a 165 and work your way down. Read the Owners DOC lot's of good stuff there.

Or, the simplest solution? Riing up Taffy and get one of his jet kits and be done with it. Everyone I have talked with who has bought one of his kits has been happy.

I'll give it one more go at the weekend, if I cant get it going right I'll be on the phone to taffy next week.
