Hi I am wanting to put new gearing on a KTM 450 2006 we will be riding alot of rocky mountains full of steep inclines and declines and creek crossings.

Victorian High Country Australia.

What gearing should i be running 14/50?

Anyone have any experience riding a 450 up the victorian high country and what gearing would be very helpful. Keep in mind when i get back to the open desert I only want to change the front sprocket not the rear :)

On the 650 Berg I ran 15/45 and that was ok but not sure what to run on this smaller bike?

Any one

Is the KTM the close ratio MXC or the wider ratio EXC? The close ratio MXC would need to be geared down to 14/52 or even 13/52 for the real tight stuff. 14/50 is stock gearing. Many EXC riders gear down a little from there. I prefer 14/48 gearing in my Revloc equipped '04 KTM 525 (540) EXC for all-round use. With the auto clutch, the somewhat tall low gear is fine for the tightest terrain while the taller 6th gear provides for effortless higher speed 'cruising'.

I've always run 14/52 on my 400/450/525 KTMs but we ride a fair bit of single line and rutted out hills. 14/50 should be fine for what you intend. By the way 14/52 on a 525 was good for 161 km/h so 6th still cruises along OK.

The 14 will be fine, most guys run 14/50 on the KTMs. I just prefer low gearing. The 13 will cause your swingarm rubber to wear a bit quick.
