Multiple Kinds

Moto,GP,WORCS.
I am trying to find a set up that will do for all as it gets old changing things so much!
It seems that 15 x 50 might not be to tall for Moto? Just wondering if anybody has used it?

RE: Multiple Kinds

Mark,
For what it's worth I run 15/48 on outdoor track and 13/48 on SX course. this is with a 400 engine. So I would think 15/50 would be a good all around choice for the 550 engine.
Cheers, Ryan

Hi Dan, my bike is a 6 speed. I believe Mark has a 6 speed also according to some of his earlier posts.

Regards, Ryan

yes if the bike is a 6 speed close ratio i would think 15/50 would be a good choice for the uses previously mentioned.i have 14/50 on a 450 6 speed close ratio.dan

I am running 15/50 on my 496. I preferred the 14/48 as it closed the gaps better and gave me a more useful 4th gear (and shortened the gaps in 5th and 6th), but the 14T was too hard on chain sliders, but in all honesty I am just being picky (the bike pulls the taller gearing just fine).

15 x 50 is on!

Guys this gearing is cool and it still halls the mail in 6th gear!
I think this will help me in moto some!
Maybe I was just geared to tall for moto with 15 x 49 so we will see?
I just need to get in shape now and start racing more.
Try this gearing if you ride and race Moto,WORCS,GPS!
You just have to work a little harder at keeping the front wheel down more.

For what it's worth......

I run a 15/52 off road on my 04 fe550. First is a rock crawler, should be good for bunny hopping the logs, and 6th tops out at 100mph exactly.

I believe that you have an 05 no? If so, the gear boxes would have been the same I believe as the only difference between the FE and FC in that year was the silencer(?), graphics, ingnition in that it does not have a charging coil since there is no electric start, and of course no electric start.

That gearing is very close, just very slightly lower, as 14/48, which from general observation, many of us run on the 550.

I don't have any chain slider wear issues with the 14T, and a 52T sprocket would require a longer chain, so for me it is a bit easier to just go with the smaller CS sprocket.

I do agree that this final gearing is just right for the 550.

My bike actually came geared 14/48. When that set wore out I was trying to go to 16/52, which is just slightly lower than the 15/48 which was supposed to be stock. However, I could not make this set up fit. I have for the last several years tried to run the largest chain wheels possible as it keeps the chain more in line during suspension travel. Just an eccentricity of mine.

Glad to see that we have landed at the same ratio!
